4K Virtual Pinsanity

Better late than never here’s a video about AtGames 4K virtual pinball table. After a mammoth shoot and a bum-numbing, multi-day and night editing job, I think this one is just about ready to share with you, so here’s a link:

https://youtu.be/Aqo3kug8pPg

This video was almost all shot on a DJI Pocket 3 due to its 4K60 abilities - something my usual cameras can’t match. Since the pinball table displays at 60 FPS it only seemed right to try and show it accurately.

I’ve noticed a few minor technical issues but overall I think the camera did a decent job. Its wide angle lens and lack of overheating were additional benefits.

All I have to do now is figure out how to arrange to get this coffin-sized lump taken out of my garage, but first I’m going to take a day off because I’m currently seeing pinball whenever I close my eyes.

Have a good week and take care.

UPDATED: Tweaked some volume levels, added new explanatory overlays in a few places, adjusted a couple of crops and edit points…but most importantly, I’ve added in the plastic film peeling music following a public outcry, street riots and a strongly worded letter writing campaign. This updated video is the one now embedded and linked to above.

Ha ha Mat.. do you really think the average pinball wizard could be bothered with all those little screws and JST connectors when assembling their machine. Nooooo.. what you have there is the limited "Techmoan" edition - screws in place of magnets holding the covers on and a cluster of wires in place of the single ethernet cable connecting the units. Provides that authentic experience of assembling a 1980s tape recorder. I even learned a new technical phrase - flipper-lag - I wonder how many times I can slip that into conversation with the missus this weekend..

Gordo

I've redone the link - hopefully that fixes it. It was still showing at my end, but I suppose it depended on the browser and whether it was desktop or mobile.

Techmoan

Just noticed the thumbnail for this video isn't aggregating on Patreon. Odd. https://ibb.co/m6V23mX

I’m waiting on them to contact me about the collection - I’ve managed to shove it in the back corner. I can’t use the back door but I can get the car in, so I can hang on. Looks like making the video wasn’t the wisest idea though. Poorly received and with a view count unlikely to earn back enough to pay legal minimum hourly wage for the time I spent on it. Never mind, you never know till you try.

Techmoan

Here's hoping Liberty Games did not require you to disassemble it, after all - and that you have your garage back.

Grace Robbins

It’s not the wisest of ideas that’s for sure.

Techmoan

Seems odd to have a bunch of cables rather than providing a single ribbon cable to join the top

Russell Albert

That’s how they are in person too - a bit too clackity for me too. There was an arcade game with a ‘knocker’ inside the cabinet back in the day - was it Q*Bert? - anyway it sounds much like that…and that seemed weird to me too back then.

Techmoan

Maybe it was just the recording or just me, but those flippers when fired sounded like snooker balls hitting each other and nothing like actual pinball flippers.

Mark Elliott

Still working on my own… the DJI Pocket 3 did the face tracking. You can see it used in two other sections, the intro and at the end of the casters section. It’s way too enthusiastic in trying to keep the face dead centre to use it more frequently.

Techmoan

12:26 Do you have a cameraperson now?? I'm not used to seeing you being tracked by the camera. 🎬

Mike Pumphrey

It's interesting that when viewed from the side, the ball looks smaller visually and reminded me of those plastic stand up tables you could get for the home in the 80s that was the worst of both worlds (took up a lot of space and wasn't fun... no "haptic heft"). The balls were tiny, almost like one size up from a pachinko ball.

David Fulton

I'm not sure I want to meet the person who shells out 1600+ English pounds sterling for a flipper game yet doesn't have it together to own a Phillips head screwdriver! I mean, if their priorities are that unsorted I can't imagine then having the wherewithal to assemble that device!

David Fulton

Thanks for the review! I'm 100% with you with the lag comment, hoping they will fix it and windering why they didn't fix it before launch, it's their main title! Buying this I would expect to have more actual tables I remember from my youth. "new" tables may be excellent, but if they don't bring back memories that's not worth it.

CheeseParis

That's very good, Mat. It's very convincing looking down on the table. (Re the comments above from evilution, I bought the pocket 1, 2 and 3 and the 3 is superb. The Wirelss Go II works brilliantly with it too, recording stereo from the two mics.)

Stephen Bell

Bit late to watch it.. Hmm, that would be my dream setup to be honest. I played T2, River Rescue, Star Trek and Addams Family the most. And could play forever on 3 out of 4 of them (always got a free play on score). And Addams Family is my favourite. Price is a bit much, but after a good bit of saving doable. However, I can't stand any form of delay. Not on emulators, joystick response, not on pinball machines. Oh well, gives me time to save up and find a place for it.. Which might be a challenge 😅 Really cool to see, thanks!

Bas van Schooten

I think I have a 2 stored away somewhere - but that tells you all you need to know about it. The 3 is way better in every way. I'd highly recommend it. The low light capabilities and wireless mic integration make it especially suitable for shooting DIY jobs indoors. You should go for the full 'creator combo' though to get the mic and accesssories.

Techmoan

Nice updates. 👍🏻 I can tell the audio has been adjusted, and I'm sure this version will avoid the public outcry; excepting the one viewer that dislikes the peel music (why ?). I think the music is very amusing and endearing. And you sped up the plaque peel music, that's all the more amusing.

Grace Robbins

I'm impressed that there's no echo in any of the vocal audio despite filming in a brick box. I remember you reviewing the DJI Osmo Pocket 1. Did you ever try the Pocket 2 or did you move straight to the 3? I have given up on my GoPro Hero 5 (crap) and have been filming everything with my iPhone 14 pro but that's started displaying a nasty tendency to stop recording video randomly (1 out of 30 times). That's no good when you lose 10 minutes of work before you realise. I was comparing the Pocket 2 and 3 and although the 3 does 4K, the Pocket 2 looks like it might be the better purchase for the price and specs.

evilution

i gotta say, i love this device. i loved playing pinball as a kid, and video game versions just aren't the same. but it seems with this, you get the best of both worlds! I'll likely never own one either.

Myles

Right 😆

BlueChainsawMan

ne sexy music when you removed the plastic? oof, that hurt ;)

Myles

I thought the pinball music was a direct line into the camera, it sounded so good. I noticed your voice was not a consistent volume, but I think that was due to the mic and where you were standing/kneeling. Is the music from 13:41 - 15:43 an overlay of your dialogue? I might recommend reducing that volume, if so. Otherwise, the gameplay volume wasn't noticeably loud, in my opinion.

Grace Robbins

I’m wondering if I need to reduce the volume on some of the pinball gameplay sections. Does anyone think this needs doing?

Techmoan

It took quite a while to get anything worth showing - most games were over in seconds. I’m not a twitch gamer - I can’t survive more than a few seconds in any online shooter, but when I can’t even hit a pinball I know there’s something else going on.

Techmoan

When you first showed the video of your play with the Adams Family I couldn't help but noticed the lag, but I thought it was just you being out of practice with the pinball machine. When you showed the lag, I have to say you did quite a job playing it as well as you did. Why do these things have to cost so much money, (way more than I can justify)?

CrimsonPig808

He did it for the little one I think

Funkmon

I’m really hoping not to have to take it apart - and I’m also hoping they take all the packaging away too. I can hope. I thought the peel music might have been a bit too much if I used it for all those sections.

Techmoan

As an army veteran, I thank you for your service! 😏

Bo Holbo Rasmussen

• Very fun video - I thoroughly enjoyed your assembly and demonstration. • You've put this video together very well. The multiple camera positions and endless editing is very evident here. Is it odd that I've missed your garage shoots? • I am desperately in need of playing pinball right now. • The tracking/panning capabilities of the DJI Pocket 3 became extremely useful on this video. Very nice. • You're more fit than you think - you can kneel on a concrete floor and not howl from the knee pains (unlike myself). • I'm guessing taking the unit apart and re-boxing it wasn't nearly as much fun as putting it together. I tend to wish you'd consider taking on a multi-purpose assistant who is willing to break their back lifting devices instead of you. • I thought you wouldn't add peel music accompaniment 😕 - but I was satisfied further into the video, thank you. Take care 🤍🤍

Grace Robbins

That was the gimbal doing face tracking - it was used in the first shot too, but I had to overlay video on the top to cover most of that scene up as it looked like the efforts of a cameraman who’d had too many espressos.

Techmoan

I really enjoy these videos featuring "Mat's Toys" (what I'm calling them for now anyway) which include not just the pinball machines, but the gambling machines, chess devices, player piano, etc. I'm pretending to believe that the shot in which you wheeled the machine across the garage floor was not done via a slider rig or in the editing package but was actually done with a camera operator panning the camera across (who was either The Mrs. or some hapless delivery driver you impressed into your service).😉

Mark Hesse

Oh thank goodness. I thought initially the Addams family table looked bad but figured it was because of effects... Then you showed it. Actually pretty bad. The Peanuts table looked better, but unplayable lag thankfully means I'll put this on the back burner. I'll keep an eye out for reviews in the next couple of years and see if it gets fixed. Hopefully it doesn't. Sometimes I just need an excuse to not get something.

Funkmon

Have you been hacked?

Techmoan

I started the video assuming they wouldn't get the ambience right, but boy that display does look magnificent. When you started rattling off names like T2, Star Trek TNG, and Indiana Jones, I suddenly went back in time and remembered those pinball games. I hope that they fix the software so the ports of old pinball games play as well as they look. Maybe I'll have space for something like this someday.

Joe Moorman

A nice gadget indeed, but I see the problem of it needing too much space... And anyways, I would be the kind of person that would like to get the real thing and having to hassle around with it to keep it working 😜

MrHammond

HEYYYA! WICKED! Copy shallow! What's your opinion about that, guys? One! Exclamation mark!

Gadgetman

Another great vid, but would be 100% better with the correct BGM for removing protective films.

Matt Claydon

Oh no. I have been considering one of these products. I hope you hate it. *Crosses fingers*

Funkmon

Super excited for this one, thanks Mat! And seeing pinball whenever I close my eyes sounds like a great time to me.

Extrema22

Superb.

Martipar

Our hero! Thanks for the effort. Something to look forward to 🙂

CBits Tech

Awwww can’t wait for this one. Will watch it with a bacon butty on Wednesday morning!!!!!!!!! Cheers Matt.
