This Painted World was not like the others. 

Except for the bridge, of course, thought the adventurer, as he tested his weight on its snow-laden planks. And the cold. It's always damn cold. 

Never had he seen such a land so hopelessly entwined, completely at the mercy of the laws of convergence.

This painting inspired wonder, yes..but also dread, for he recognised many of the trials that stood before him. Beyond the fog, upon the Towers of Lords..were those not Dragons, breathing fire? He spied another perched upon the Ephemeral Castle, and his heart sank. He would not be able to traverse their bridges. Beyond these medieval lands was the Feudal State, caught in endless conflict between samurai and assassin, and to its right, the Dark City, whose horrors he could barely discern, which was just as well. 

"There.." he muttered aloud, as his eyes fell upon the Golden Gate betwixt the worlds. That was where he had to go, but the entrance was blocked, shielded by a cascade of golden energy that flowed from the great sword thrust into the earth. Something told him he would have to conquer all four corners of this place, before he would be permitted to advance...

He shivered. I've faced these things once before. I can face them again, he thought, hand tightening on his cross-spear. His resolve was unbreakable. He would emerge victorious, as he always had. 

So he steeled himself, and stepped forward, into the fog.
