The Fall Equinox (Poem)

I've been writing this secret since the last winter solstice and yesterday I finished this up. I tweaked it today, and now it's ready to share.

In the golden light of the fading day,

the balance is found between summer and winter.

The night shall equal the day,

as leaves slowly turn fiery in the shortening days.

Even though my fur has started to thicken,

and the wind promises cold nights ahead,

there are many beautiful days still before us,

before the first frost comes,

and ravens will call out across the snow.

These are the days when fallen leaves crunch under my paws—

as the earth begins to rest and the long grasses begins to die back,

as the fields fall fallow, ready for the next year.

Now, in the fading light of the day, I find peace,

and I find hope, for this will be the time of secret midnight hunts,

in the crisp autumn nights.

So onward, through the woods in the lengthening shadows,

to the old stones raised by our ancestors.

Let us speak with reverence about them, and let those,

who have crossed over the shimmering path know we speak of them—

as we feast on the bounty of summer,

ready to face the cold and dark months together,

for together, is where a pack belongs.
