Wolf-boy's name
Added 2025-06-06 04:07:31 +0000 UTCHere is the poll for naming our new character, Wolf-boy, 人狼 Jinrō. I've been on this Japanese bend lately and this character's development has been influenced by that. I stumbled across a list of wolf-related Japanese names that I wanted to include in the list, so here is that list with an explanation of them - as well as an explanation of David Chicago's excellent suggestion. I may choose the top two and use one as a "nickname" or I may decide that I just like the idea of an unpronounceable name in his native language and go with the top pic for the other - we'll see how the numbers turn up. So be sure to vote for as many choice as strike your fancy and let's see where this goes!
ROCORRO His native name in full is unpronounceable by humans. His language is tonal, and some of the tones in his name are higher than the range of human hearing. Therefore, the best approximation I can suggest is Rocorro. The R is pronounced like the French, but even more guttural, lower in the throat, almost a growl: rrrrrrro corrrrrrr rrrrrrro.
ŌKAMI (狼) The name “Ōkami” directly translates to “wolf” in Japanese. Bearing a simple yet powerful meaning, this name captures the wild and untamed nature of the wolf, making it a compelling choice for those who seek to embody strength and independence.
RŌ (狼) Though not a direct translation, the name “Rō” is derived from “rōkan” (狼干) which means “wolf-shrine.” This name is ideal for individuals who desire a unique and subtle connection to the wolf, symbolizing a spiritual guardian or protector.
KIBA (牙) Kiba translates to “fang” in Japanese, an intrinsic part of a wolf’s predatory prowess. This name highlights the primal, instinctual aspects of the wolf, embodying ferocity and survival skills.
FENRIRU (フェンリル) Inspired by the mythological Norse wolf Fenrir, the adapted Japanese name “Fenriru” invokes the legendary and formidable aspects of the wolf. This name is ideal for those who see the wolf as an epic and heroic figure, bridging cultural mythologies.
RŌGA (狼牙) Combining “rō” (狼), meaning “wolf,” and “ga” (牙), meaning “fang,” “Rōga” encapsulates the fierce and predatory nature of the wolf. This name underscores sharpness, agility, and the ability to defend and assert dominance.
RONIN (浪人) Though traditionally meaning a wandering samurai without a master, “Ronin” can also evoke the image of a solitary wolf roaming freely. This name symbolizes independence, a journey of self-discovery, and a life free from societal constraints.
MGHELI (მგელი) "Mgheli" means "wolf" in the Georgian (Kartvelian) language.
