[EARLY VIDEO] The Clifton Hill derailment
Added 2025-07-22 10:20:40 +0000 UTCHi everyone, this was not a video I was planning to make 10 days ago.. then an X'trap hit the dirt and my plans changed. This one was very much a collaboration with Alexander Jamieson, who lent his garden railway for filming again, and made a lot of observations on the incident.
I didn't really consider making a video about this when it first happened, and you might notice that I only took still images of the site. But then I started getting a lot of questions from non-rail friends, and realised there was a demand for a better explanation than what the media were providing. Which also led me to some commentary on the media coverage it's self.
My voice is a bit croaky in this one - if it had been anything else I would have waited to record it, but breaking news doesn't wait!

As if to corroborate your point, there was a rail accident here in Sweden today that _did_ involve a pantograph becoming entangled in the wires. And of course, what happened was the wires got ruined while the actual train stayed put on the track. It did interrupt service for a few hours (as of writing, one of the two tracks is back in service), and I’m sure the passengers had a very bad time, but it looks like it’ll just be remembered as one of many small incidents in the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Summer of 2025.
