As you cross the threshold of the city gates, a wave of mixed aromas and sounds washes over you. Welcome to Baldur's Gate, adventurers—a sprawling metropolis nestled on the northern banks of the Chionthar River, where the scent of the sea mingles with the pungent odors of the bustling harbor and the sweat of countless souls.
Above the cacophony of dockworkers yelling and merchants haggling, you hear the distant clang of the forge and the calls of street vendors. The cobblestone streets under your feet are worn smooth by countless travelers who have come before you, each leaving their mark on this ancient city. Narrow alleys twist and turn, leading you deeper into the maze of buildings that seem to lean over you, their upper stories almost touching above, blocking out the sky.
Look around—here, in the Lower City, life is raw and unfiltered. Stalls line the streets, selling everything from exotic spices and mysterious trinkets to freshly caught fish and sizzling meats. Children dart between the legs of passersby, their hands quick and their eyes sharper, always on the lookout for an easy mark. The air is thick with the smell of salt and fish from the harbor, mixed with the occasional whiff of unwashed bodies and refuse.
To the north, the majestic buildings of the Upper City rise, home to the wealthy patriars who gaze down with thinly veiled disdain at the common folk below. Their mansions are pristine, their streets patrolled by vigilant guards, ever watchful for any sign of trouble.
Your eyes are drawn to the Seatower of Balduran, its stone walls standing resolute against the crashing waves, a reminder of the city's rich history and enduring strength. The Flaming Fist soldiers patrol the streets, their eyes scanning the crowd, ensuring that the laws of the city are upheld—or at least, that the right palms are greased.
But it's not all grit and grime. The Wide, Baldur's Gate's grand marketplace, awaits you. Here, the finest wares from across Faerûn are traded, and fortunes are made and lost in a heartbeat. Temples and shrines to various gods offer solace and sanctuary to the faithful and desperate alike.
As you stand at the edge of this vibrant, chaotic tapestry, know this: Baldur's Gate is a city of opportunities and perils in equal measure. It will test your resolve, challenge your wits, and reward those brave and clever enough to seize its secrets. So steel yourselves, adventurers. Every corner turned and every shadow passed could hold a new adventure, a new ally, or a new enemy.
