[EARLY VIDEO] Express running in Melbourne

There's still *just* time for one more video for 2023! This is one of those ones that's been slowly coming together for ages, was abandoned a few times, and finally came together over the last week. Some of the footage was taken just yesterday. Happy new year!

I'm not really sure! Possibly there isn't space for it at Greensborough at that time, or they need it back in the city by a certain time. But it's certainly a bit odd. Happy new year to you too!

Happy new years everyone… Hey Martin… why do they have train that only goes to Macleod weekdays around 5ish? Everyone gets on… only to off there and wait for the next train towards hurstbridge which seems a bit pointless aside from AirCon and having feeling you’ve achieved something.

Hahahaha, that was brilliant! I missed it, first time.

Nice Easter egg @ 9:23

Another really informative and entertaining video, thanks Martin. As a kid in the 80s, when my dad and I would be coming home to Chelsea from the city, he'd always have us take the express to Caulfield, even if it was a Dandenong train. I pointed our that we'd be getting on the next Frankston train at Caulfield anyway and we'd be better off waiting a few minutes in the city for said Frankston train, but his idea was that it was better to get part was as early as possible. The best part, as mentioned, was rocketing through the express section.

Yeah I think I'm in the 'keep it around just incase' side because 320 is actually insane 😭 lets hope there are no major disruptions from now on I guess! And yay!! Glad you liked it, we're hoping to do more ptv/transport related lists in the new year :)

Great Breakdown! Agreed with the feel-good express statement My local line is the Glen Waverley line, but I find myself migrating to the Cranbourne/Pakenham line very often. Despite requiring me to drive over to the latter line, the service frequency has made it more of a pleasant journey & creates the illusion of a service that is less slow, compared to my usual Glen Waverley. Loved the breakdown of the HBE line section, never knew the logistics behind how Metro were able to squeeze so many expresses through a double track section. Great breakdown :)

Great question! I've had a few arguments with randoms on the internet about this one. :) The general thing seems to be that removing the crossovers reduces maintenance and points of failure, essentially 'streamlining' getting rid of complexity. The secondary argument is that both lines are so busy now that when things go wrong, you can't necessarily fit all the trains from one pair onto the other anyway. It looks like there's a big push to separate the future Metro Tunnel lines (Dandenong/Sunbury) as much as possible from the rest of the network, but in reality that can only happen so much when you also have V/line and freight operators using those routes. Although I can see the point of both lines being very busy, I think for such an important place it's still important to keep options for flexibility. For one thing, there are still plenty of times when you certainly can fit all trains on one track pair (ie late at night). If a disruption happened when it's busy, you could also reverse most/all suburban trains, but still let V/line and freight across onto the other side. Now with the crossovers gone, if there's an occupation on the Through lines (for instance), the Long Island steel train has to be 'truck replaced,' which according to Marcus Wong requires ~320 trucks per day: https://wongm.com/2018/05/rail-replacement-trucks-for-the-frankston-line/ (..maybe future video topic there?) Also I listened to an episode of your podcast on the train the other day (the city loop one of course), it was very good!

Do we know why they got rid of the crossovers at Caulfield? seems so silly tbh
