[EARLY VIDEO] The Broadmeadows Runaway!

It's finally here! This one ended up being a huge project. It posed an interesting challenge of illustrating, given there are very few visual records of the actual event. This was greatly assisted by my mate Alexander Jamieson (some of you may know him as Melbournesparks on youtube, with the G scale garden tramway). After just a small suggestion from me, he went to a lot of effort recreating scenes for this video in Open Rails, the open-source version of Train Simulator. The Comeng model already existed but only in Metro era condition, so he back-dated it to approximately 2003 M>train condition for the video. There are also a handful of photos of real M>train Comengs taken by me on my film camera when I was just a kid. There will be a behind the scenes video covering all this, likley next month.

Anyway, we had a lot of fun with this one - hope you enjoy it!

[EARLY VIDEO] The Broadmeadows Runaway!

Comments

Thankyou, yes it's been doing pretty amazingly! This is definitely my first video to average over 10k a day for a whole week.

Bit late to comment but thank you again for another excellent video. This is a genuinely wild thing to have happened and it's kind of a miracle that no one had boarded it before it started rolling. Also been keeping an eye out on YouTube every now and then to see how the views on this one are going, and to see it tick over 100k is sah exciting! I'm so happy to see your videos getting the flowers they deserve - although still not enough if you ask me!

Charles

Outstanding work, Martin, thank you! Getting some happy flashbacks from the Open Rails shots too.

Matt Austin

So glad you enjoyed it! I'm glad it gave the illusion the train was continually moving, I did try to pace it like that! But no, they're all just individual scenes, and the ones at broady, Glenroy and Moonee Ponds aren't actually on a complete route, Alexander just built those three spots specifically to stage the shots.

Taitset

Absolutely excellent video! This might be my favorite video from you by far. It's got all your usual level of quality, but has a great script, uses the excellent track diagrams and uses all sorts of approaches - audio only, recreation in game, pictures, etc. I love all the little details scattered throughout the video like the M-Train billboard at Broadmeadows, the trolley problem guy, the chapter titles but I especially love the recreation of the phone calls, they were my favorite part of the ATSB report. "Oh yeah, where am I going to put that?" "Yeah, righto", just very Australian response to an impending disaster. It's got a definite appeal to non-rail fans! I showed my partner, who's not into trains as much as I am, and she was on the edge of her seat, and was so nervous as it headed towards Spencer Street. Silly question, is the train in the video moving real-time? What I mean is, is the train moving towards Spencer Street even when it's not on screen? There were a couple of moments when I was looking at the train on screen during the security camera animations and wondering if it had taken into account the time it had been off screen while you were showing other stuff or narrating.

Alex Pennini

Definitely my favourite video from you so far! Very entertaining and explains it very well. The security camera animations of the train running through the stations were really professionally done, and the diagrams were very helpful.

Qazzy

Haha yeah, it was just rambling nonsense with some slightly sweary sounding bits.

Taitset

Oh absolutely! I'm trying to figure out what you covered as the inaudible mumbling but cant quite pick it out...

Iris Donaldson

I know what you mean! I do love how funny that phone conversation is given that's what they actually said. Especially how the signaller gets hung up on at the end.

Taitset

The second I noticed them I knew I had hit gold! I can already see myself rewatching this later tonight and laughing at parts again. "And where am I going to put it?" broke me as well. It sounds weird to say this but you make me wish we had more train disasters because the way you told this story was beautiful haha!!

Iris Donaldson

I'm so glad someone noticed the chapter titles haha

Taitset

It's INCREDIBLY hard to pick a highlight of the video, you got some great humour throughout it (chapter titles especially are a good chuckle), but the trolley problem bit be the tip top!!

Iris Donaldson

Thank you so much! Not going to lie, I did keep laughing at the trolley problem bit myself. 🤣

Taitset

That was bloody brilliant, had lots of laughs across it but was an absolutely lovely watch as always!! Lost my mind at the trolley problem reference
