Comet Lord Miniatures Painting Contest

Hey everyone!

I’ve been meaning to run a painting contest for quite a while now. Originally, I wanted this to celebrate and spread the word about a big milestone in my journey as Comet Lord Miniatures. A couple months ago, I released a small selection of resin cast / 3D printed miniatures for my store. I got so swamped with things - I finally got this together now!

This contest will run for 3 months so that people can 3D print something big or purchase a physical miniature to paint.

Rules

• You are allowed multiple submissions, but you will only be eligible to win one prize.
  
• Your submission should be painted specifically for the contest. Anything painted before the contest will not be eligible to win. Submissions must have a photograph that includes the date prior to painting.
  
• Your submission can have minor alterations, but the majority of the model(s) should still be recognizable as Comet Lord Miniatures. I don’t really make terrain, so I understand using terrain from other creators.
  
• You can print at any scale. I’ll be factoring in the scale of the model when judging. Bigger doesn’t always mean better.
  
• If you come in 1st, 2nd or 3rd, I will require a valid mailing address so I can mail you your prize.

The contest will run until the end of February 2023. Any submission after 11:59pm CST on February 28th 2023 will not be eligible to win.

Winners will be announced within a few weeks of the contest closing. There may be delays depending on the number of entries and other unforeseen factors.

However, I would also like to mention that I will cancel the contest if I don’t have at least 10 entries. So if you could share this contest and your submissions on social media, that would be appreciated.

Judging

The contest will be judged by myself, and I’ll also be getting feedback from a few other people. They will not be participating in the contest. I’d just like to say we are not professional miniature painters, but we all have experience painting miniatures!

What will I be looking for?

Execution:

• Did you properly thin and apply your paints? Is the paint job clean?
• Did you finish painting the piece / is it all painted to a similar standard of quality?
• Is the model properly cleaned up (removing supports / cleaning up mold lines,etc)?

Composition

• What is the focal point?
• Where does the piece lead my eye?
• Does your paint job / diorama tell a story?

Palette

• Did you paint your miniature using colours that compliment each other?
• Are the colours you chose different enough, but still complimentary?
• Are things properly highlighted and shaded?

Miscellaneous

• Did you effectively paint using advanced techniques like OSL (Object Source Lighting) or NMM (Non-Metallic Metals)?
• It’s not a photo contest, but did you take clean, crisp photos? Is the background messy or distracting?

How to Enter

1. Paint any miniature(s) from Comet Lord Miniatures!

2. E-mail your entry to cometlord.paintingcontest@gmail.com before the end of the contest.

• Include your name/username.
• Include a link to an Imgur gallery or equivalent so I can view/download the images for judging.
• Your gallery must include at a front and back view of the model. (Or left / right, etc).
• Please include an image with a bottle of paint (citadel, army painter, vallejo, etc) or a ruler so I can see what scale you printed it at.
• Attach an image to the email of the miniature before you started painting it. Primer and/or  green stuff patching is fine. Please also include a piece of paper with the date written on it.

3. Post a photo of your submission on social media (Facebook, Instagram or Twitter) with the hashtag #cometlordpaintingcontest22 and tag Comet Lord Miniatures in it! If you want to post it on Reddit, please provide a link to the post.
