We originally had Lathreas for one article for August, then realized a second needed to get done, and.... by today it had morphed into 3 articles and, by accident, a special edition of the newsletter focused on everything integument related! This has math, literature research, and strategic thinking, covering both fur and scales, and...IDK, personally I'm just amazed. This is seriously a treat to read.
In this issue:
- Lathreas - Feasibility study: fur and overheating
- Lathreas - New developments in the developmental biology of scales
- Lathreas - Specifications for engineering implantable fur
Lathreas wrote this short blurb as a bit of an intro to the set of articles:
One of the big challenges that we aim to tackle is to enable human skin to grow fur, feathers, or scales, preferably within our lifetimes. As you might imagine, this is a very challenging aim, and as such, we need to use a good strategy to tackle these problems. Like with any challenging problem, we must approach this from the perspective of an engineer: to cut the problem into smaller pieces until each piece can be solved individually.
We need to consider each element of the puzzle, from potential overheating, to proper coloration and interaction with light, to the strategies used to implement said changes. In this newsletter issue, we will talk about both scales and fur within this context.
Seriously this stuff is awesome. Thank you Lathreas for putting all this work together, and thank you fine folks for supporting and making this work possible!
