Great video as always, and thanks for the extra research I’m sure it took to bring it together. I worry about what the demographics look like for new players buying into something like 40k. In my opinion it’s unlike many other hobbies in that the ongoing costs aren’t clear unless you’ve been around for a while. If it’s mostly older folks with disposable income then yeah, it’s expensive but compared to skis or a canoe it’s not crazy. But I worry that GW’s target demographic is much younger. I’d have few qualms about steering a young person towards just mini painting as a hobby but if they asked me about 40k I’d feel really irresponsible if I didn't play devil's advocate.

I'd be interested in seeing where the Middle Earth one sits amid all of this - I seem to remember when it came out that it mostly seemed like a massively better value proposition compared to 40k, albeit with less detailed kits, a smaller scale and less versatility in terms of a competitive scene.
That being said, that was two decades ago, but I'd be interested to know whether it might have a role in filling the niche for players unwilling to spend 40k money but who want more options and scale than the skirmish games.
More generally, I'd be interested in hearing Ian's views (if any) on the game, whether he thinks GW will persist with it in the medium term, and if not, whether they will potentially look for a like for like comparison with potentially another external or internal IP, or whether they're set on their current model of skirmish and then mega as the two main game sizes.

An another well made and comprehensive video. If I had any friends who aren't already Warhammer junkies I would recommend this video for them. On the topic of experienced gamers, I would love to see a video giving a broad overview of narrative gaming for 40K, AoS, etc. YouTube is filled with videos explaining how to play games, what to buy for new players, tier list videos, talk about 'the Meta', net lists, and other atrocities. I think that you are the one YouTuber best positioned to introduce narrative gaming in a big picture way to miniature gamers online.

I was in the process of pricing up a modular synth rig when I got back into 40k and tiny plastic soldiers took over my life. So, ironically, 40k saved me a lot of money...

Yeah, buying two boxes is definitely cheapest. But won't work for every legion and it's a bloody slog!!

My 3000 points of White Scars cost a bit more than that, but quite a chunk comes from 'luxuries' such as upgrade kits and models from Forgeworld; I guess buying the AoD box twice, spraypainting them dark silver and playing Iron Warriors might be the cheapest way to get to 3k?
