Sohum's Picks #8 | Dream Theater

Dream Theater is where we enter Prog Metal heaven... or hell. Depending on how you feel about it. It's not the easiest to process on a first pass, but it's worth exploring. The solos in this song are so precious, so I spend a lot of time discussing the guitar solos in this ;)

haha ive never been the biggggest JLB fan, but I appreciate the role he plays in their work. Especially when things start getting epic... Tabs become intuitive with time, but it's a double edged sword. It can be harder to put on your music theory hat when using tabs

'Dream Theater' I know for about 2 years and I like them a lot. I would never categorized it as Prog, but I trust you. As you know I am not a fan of Prog. Seems like there are exceptions. This song I still haven't heard - maybe due to the word "Illusion" in the title ;-) Interestingly, it didn't confuse me at all, not in a single moment. It feels very fluent and natural to me and I love all these switches, that makes it really interesting....the shift from dreamy to fragile to powerful to heavy.... With 'Dream Theater' I feel in save hands and can give myself over completely. I also appreciate the voice of James LaBrie immensely and I could only wish he started singing a bit earlier and more. Together with your instructions it was a great experience. It is such a captivating sensation when you are completely in your element! Seriously, who needs drugs when there is such wonderful music? Ha ha, when a non-religious person swears to god..... ;-P I have never seen such notation before. So, thank you for explaining it so well, also for non-guitar players.
