The Best Fashion Movies (That Aren't About Fashion)
Added 2024-05-02 14:24:30 +0000 UTCQuick video for you all that won't be coming out publicly. With all the exclusive projects like the wardrobe tour and all the extended interviews, we haven't gotten to do a proper patreon exclusive episode in a while :)
We're already abroad working on a massive upcoming project. Very excited to share when the time is right.
Tell us what movies we missed!

2024-07-24 13:33:06 +0000 UTCThere has been a few films that I always remember what got me to be in love with fashion and it one that stands alone was the fifth element. Every costume was immaculately done by JPG and is a great example of retro futurism.

2024-07-15 18:33:30 +0000 UTCThey're difficult to find because the (thoroughly remarkable) artist and his gallery (Barbara Gladstone) very tightly control the films' distribution and availability, but the Cremaster Cycle (a suite of five films) by Matthew Barney are extraordinarily novel, inventive, visually dazzling and narratively rich works that, in addition to their complex conceptual content, are a marvel to behold (costumes, prosthetics, gear, sculptural objects, etc.).

2024-05-12 06:12:44 +0000 UTC**hot take** The Office has some of the best TV costumes I've ever seen. Justification: If the goals of costume are to reflect the setting and personality of the characters, The Office achieves that perfectly. Although they all wear "boring" office clothes, there are small nuances in the style of clothes that reflect the character's ages and personalities. e.g. - Andy wears a style of necktie particular to Ivy League colleges, since he attended one. - Dwight wears short sleeve off-white oxford collar shirts that date to when he was younger. - Michael wears a tie pattern popular in the 90's but becoming dated by the time of the show, mimicking his central conflict of maintaining relevance. - Jim wears a more "modern" shirt and tie but never buttons the top button, showing his relaxed attitude. Basically the costume director perfectly takes advantage of these nuances in officewear trends to develop the characters. Source: I sold menswear to office workers for years and the characters remind me of my customers– they wear what I would have sold them.

2024-05-06 04:41:30 +0000 UTCResponding to your take on "A single man", you should absolutely watch "99 francs". It's a french movie that probably didn't get much exposure internationally made by Frederic Beigbeder, a former art director in advertising. It combines a striking reflexion on consumerism with a visual way of storytelling that comes from his background of directing commercials. Really worth your time!

2024-05-04 11:14:48 +0000 UTCCrimson Peak, Velvet Goldmine, and Valerie and her Week of Wonders are the first movies i think of, but I also feel a need to mention Witch Hat Atelier even though it's a manga because of how carefully designed and beautifully drawn the clothing is (the main character is also the daughter of a tailor and that influences how she uses magic sometimes). Mello's entire wardrobe in Death Note, Subaru's hat/glove/jacket combinations in Tokyo Babylon, and Pine's suspenders in ch. 11 of Otherworld Barbara (also all manga, whoops ^^;) are some specific "costume" elements that come to mind.

2024-05-03 12:18:23 +0000 UTCNinotchka, 1939. Ninotchka (Greta Garbo) is a no-nonsense Communist sent from Moscow to Paris to complete the sale of jewels confiscated from Russian nobles during the revolution. Ninotchka is utterly utilitarian until she is seduced by the sensuousness of Paris, the beauty and whimsy of fashion (that hat!), and the charms of Count Léon d'Algout (Melvyn Douglas). Ninotchka commenting on Western decadence – (looking at a ladies’ hat in a Paris display window) -- How can such a civilization survive which permits their women to put things like that on their heads? It won’t be long now, comrades. And it wasn't long before Ninotchka/Garbo is wearing one of the oddest hats (it looks like a pixie's hut) I've seen in a 1930s film -- and that's saying something. The costume designer for the film was Adrian.

2024-05-03 00:07:25 +0000 UTCVelvet Goldmine (1998) was probably the first film to make me think about clothing as a personal expression, and I don't think it's a hard argument to say it inspired many fashion films/editorials. Especially the opening scene!

2024-05-02 22:23:40 +0000 UTCThe Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) This movie is as beautiful as it is dark thanks to the costume design done by Jean-Paul Gaultier. I also can't help but imagine the blonde, spiky-haired dishwashing orphan in the film is a humorous reference to Gaultier.

2024-05-02 19:52:00 +0000 UTCI couldn't recommend 'Valerie and Her Week of Wonders' (1970) enough. It's a Czechoslovakian surrealist coming of age horror movie about the bizarre dream of a young girl on her first night of menstruation, and in the process she discovers a world filled with witchcraft and vampires. The cinematograph stood out the most to me due to its extremely experimental nature, and the narrative and content is so unforgiving and raw. It was extremely controversial film then because this artistic expression was a direct response to the "Socialist realism" movement in the Soviet Union where by art and literature was made extremely literal, often showing the depiction of idealised USSR.
