New DMG Reloaded Handout: Verbs
Added 2024-09-14 14:40:24 +0000 UTCI'm excited to release the next handout in the Dungeon Master's Guide: Reloaded series on game and narrative design: Verbs!
This handout is easily the most theoretical/academic/pseudo-mathematical one I've released yet, and hella dense. It's also, however, the most fundamental, because it seeks to explain the atomic elements of gameplay in D&D, and how they combine to produce different gameplay experiences.
In this handout, you'll find:
An introduction to verbs and verb sequences
Rigorous theoretical definitions of choice and challenge
An introduction to decision trees, including their attributes of breadth, depth, and complexity
A breakdown of the breadth, depth, and complexity of decision trees associated with common gameplay types
You can read it here. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Thank you! And that's an interesting idea; I definitely think that'd be cool to do eventually. I'll file that away for when I feel I've hit a good point to start consolidating these instead of writing more.

2024-09-14 17:06:35 +0000 UTCI really like the thought, time and effort you put in these. Will there be a chapter on applications? Like, Putting It All Together? It could be something as simple as a side-by-side where you create a mini-adventure with sidebars that point out and point to concepts discussed in these chapters and how they were applied?
