"It's great to meet you at last, Sir"
Doing her best to balance a friendly yet respectful tone, Annie extended a professional handshake.
"Doctor. A Pleasure" Dr Mason responded with a slight nod. He took Annie's hand and held it for a moment, examining the polish on each of Annie's short nails. He Hmm'd with faint approval then stated "You must be my new girl."
She hesitated a moment, staring awkwardly back then cleared her throat, "Annie, the Client Liason, I-"
"Amber tells me the driver is here" he stated once again.
Turning a flushed shade of red, Annie withdrew her hand and scrambled to find the words.
She hated being interrupted, almost as much as being told she was his "New Girl".
She didn't belong to anyone, least of all this old uptight tit-surgeon that barely knew her name.
"Yes Sir. I mean, Doctor. He's waiting just outside" came the faltering response, eventually.
The sharply suited Doctor then summoned an extra glamorous Amber, who appeared from the stairs, draped in a lavish evening dress and wearing the most expensive heels Anna had ever seen in person. Not that she recognised their value at all.
"Have a good conference" Annie managed to muster enough cheer to bury her discomfort, but then felt a strange burning in her gut as she watched Amber take his arm, the pair of them striding towards the sleek black automobile waiting out on the kerb.
She wasn't jealous, she couldn't be, she promised herself. She just hated that gloating little smirk Amber threw over her shoulder on the way out.
"We shall. Don't worry, we'll both be back in time for your first appointment next week"
