Betrayed by a Brother - Process

Hey Patrons!

Little Process post on this recent piece— excluding, of course, reference pictures taken of my brother which you can see in my recent reels/tiktok lol.

This piece was especially tricky because, in the written scene, SPOILERS Kel is dangling off of a cliff, but Cassie wanted the characters cropped as half bodies. So I couldn’t show Kels lower body being suspended in air. To solve for this, I used a lot of sheer vertical lines and an off kilter angle to still give you that sense of “height/edge” and precarious balance. Putting the line of clouds below Kel also makes him feel like he’s really high up. I hope it still communicates the danger of scene, despite that lack of a life threatening drop off haha. Enjoy!

So many! Time period wise, I would definitely say 1930’s - 1950’s illustrators like Norman Rockwell, JC Leyendecker, Albert Dorne, really inspire me! For modern day artists, you can just look through my instagram following lol but my main inspirations growing up were Charlie Bowater, Viria, burdgebug, classic book fan artists. Recently also been getting into comic artists like Dan Mora, David Marquez, Clay Mann etc!!

Absolutely ate with the clever execution of this piece! I'm always so curious, do you have any artists/time periods you are inspired by throughout your art journey?

Nef_escent

Yes, I did! The entire piece is a combination of photo bashing and paint overs, which is typical of my background process. This is a great topic! I’d love to get into it, I’ll definitely note it for a possible future tutorial or video. 🕺

This is so interesting to read your thought process! Did you photobash the clouds in? Also if you take suggestions, I'd love to learn how you think about *expressions* through gesture, clothes and facial expressions (especially because real life isn't always appealing!)
