Something Old

One of the best parts of reImagining this game is recreating the assets. As most of you who have been with us since the beginning, the original character assets (except for Aelrue, which was Astrid-g3) were unavailable to us. There were other problems as well. The code was kind of a hot mess, cobbled together from at least two different sources; I was terribly surprised that the game didn’t crash more than it did. Apart from the main theme, the sfx and music was more than a little cringey.

So, part of what added to the length of game development was finding people in love with the game enough to take on a pretty huge challenge. I turned people away who were in it for a paycheck; I wanted true believers in what the game could become.

I certainly wasn’t aware of how much of a challenge that would be but am very lucky to have found the team I eventually did. Or maybe they found me; tomato-tomahto.

Steve, ever the analytical thinker, just leaned into the creative challenge of recreating/ reinterpreting the images, remaking all of them.

Jefferson, always the visionary, saw what the music could be, and ended up creating masterpieces.

Riam simply looked at the code, metaphorically shook his head and set about creating the code from the ground up, turning it into the beautiful thing it is now.

Pink has always been a big fan of the original game and had a lot of insight into recreating the characters; his skills are eventually going to become the stuff of legend.

As I had been contracted with Mobum as a writer for the game before it was abandoned, so I had a bit more insight as to the game plots. As I write for a living, I’ve expanded the game’s stories and characters.

A lot of work has gone into this reImagining, and the results that are coalescing are - in a word - beautiful.

In keeping with the idea of Something Old, here are a couple of images by Pink that juxtapose the old characters with their reImagined counterparts. Enjoy!
