I've been playing quite a bit of retro fps HROT lately. Enough to finish it then replay it on a higher (still scrub) difficulty and try and find more secrets. It's chunky and brown - but it's all by design and it works very well.
I could see no official art for the player character in HROT so I tried my hand at drawing the HROTCHLAP ('chlap' being dude or guy in czech/slovak)
I pieced him together. He seems hard done by, always getting by on what he finds. His armour is literally tank tops and pocket change so I wanted his attire to be sparse.
I was going to give him a shorter haircut, but the game is set in 1986 - before the velvet revolution. At that time, it was pretty normal for dudes to have hair down to the base of their neck, in a bit of a loose tangle. That, and since he's going against the anti-rock and roll, anti-jazz establishment, dudes probably at least TRYING to be a long haired freaky person.
He knows his way around guns. Reloads swiftly and braces his weapons well - but is flippant with his reloading technique. To me, this says he did his national service but is not a career soldier and may actually be slightly anti-military.
His brawny arms and gloves (all we see of him in game) suggest to me a labourer. An overworked everyman who has been pushed to the brink and has now found the enemies at his door. He has grabbed his tools and his old service makarov and has decided to take the fight to them.
The latest in a long line of people to walk this path. Perhaps he will be the one to succeed.
