A last little bit of 'in character' writing before I this rule book gets a little formal and rules-y.
Originally, I picked Totenzaster as a placeholder name for this game. It's gibberish, but its basically just a combination of the German word for kill and the German word for loot. The name of the game for most pencil and paper RPGs, in other words.
Before I knew it, the name had stuck and now I couldn't think of it as anything else.
So, in universe, TOTENZASTER is the name of a massive company that issues licences, funds research, builds fighting academies etc. Basically, even if a character is not directly related to the company, it will play a part in their lives.
The company itself is named after a farm girl who dared to find out what lay in the darkness.
Treasure, it turns out.
And we get a nice little sketch of famed writer/explorer/enlightener Lechfield Beachum Harmless when he was still alive.
