So true! Family and friends are outside of oneself. And yet, knowing that there are family and friends who love you can help a person get over those tough spots in life. (Hmmm, I seem to be circling back to "no man is an island") There's a wonderful children's book, "On the Night You Were Born", that talks about self-doubt. "So whenever you doubt just how special you are/ and you wonder who loves you, how much and how far/ ... notice the bears asleep at the zoo/ (It's because they've been dancing all night for you!)/ ... If the moon stays up until morning one day/ or a ladybug lands and decides to stay/ or a little bird sits at your window awhile/ It's because they're all hoping to see you smile ..."

Not only the material things but there are bunch of idols killing themselves for things like fame. They can not find true happiness in things that are outside of your self. Sad thing is that if you really think about it, even family and friends are outside of one's self. Even they can not be the sole foundation of one's happiness.

Your comments on cars, a house, etc. not being enough for happiness reminds me of the old Simon and Garfunkel song "Richard Cory" (which was based on a poem by Robinson): "They say that Richard Cory owns one half of this whole town ... He had everything a man could want/ Power, grace and style ... He surely must be happy with everything he's got. But I, I work in his factory. And I curse the life I'm living, and I curse my poverty, and I wish that I could be ... Richard Cory. ... So my mind was filled with wonder/ When the evening headlines read/'Richard Cory went home last night/And put a bullet through his head'..."
