Will we watch Sarah Williams unlocking a forbidden door with the key of Lester’s imagination? Beyond it another dimension: a flickering, radiant dimension of sexual sounds, sights and longings. But, I deliberately didn’t broaden the discussion out. Let’s do that now to see if my theory holds in the context of the wider story. So, it takes two to tango. Does Sarah reciprocate Lester’s feelings for her? Well we had this expression of her love for Lester in 29:”I know. I’m sorry,” Sarah said. “I lov-”, which was repeated again later on. In chapter 27 we get this exchange between Lester and Sarah:”Night,” Lester said absently, “I love you.” “Love you too,” Sarah said automatically before hitting the red hang up button. Actually I believe Sarah has said the “I love you” phrase to Lester at least 5 times so far. She also wants to please him by doing what he asks of her, and displayed jealousy of Lizzie on at least two occasions. So, we have a situation where the couple seem to have moved from a relationship based just on taboo sex and lust, to one where tender expressions of love seem a natural part of it too. However, does my theory hold up if we look through the authorial lens? Does Don intend for their relationship, or “love”, if we want to call it that, to blossom in future chapters? Well we cannot be sure, of course, but a little mentioned passage from 28 is pertinent here. Lester is musing on possible futures:”One of his favorite things about all of this was the hunt – the planning ahead of time, imagining how sweet his final victory would be. Sarah was already well on her way to becoming his personal full-time slut. Perhaps he would even go so far as to label her his girlfriend. Lester had never had a long-term relationship before, and Sarah certainly fit into that mold. He didn’t like the idea of a wife but would happily steal the wife of another”. So, he seems to accept that he has more than just a sexual liaison with Sarah, she is his girlfriend. Then this:” Before, Lester felt like he had been coasting through life. It had all become so routine. Posting the classified ads, preying on his roommate, finding the leverage, and exploiting them. Like a spider sitting in the corner of a room, waiting for a fly to land on its web. It wasn’t until Sarah that he had felt truly challenged – that he had to grow. And now, thanks to her, Lester was looking into the far future. He was setting long-term goals for himself. With Sarah at his side, Lester wanted to spread his seed into as many fertile fields across the country as possible… He was no longer content to be satisfied with the prey that wandered into his web. He wanted to hunt – to fill a trophy case full of conquests. The possibilities were endless. The doting housewife, the virgin bride, the pastor’s wife, a Hollywood starlet? Each would bear the fruit of their coupling. And Sarah would help him do it”. So, we have here not just Lester’s musings, but Don Silver’s too. The author is “thinking aloud” about, not just the future trajectory of this series, but also a possible new series, in the “far future”,with Lester and Sarah becoming a modern day Bonnie and Clyde, a dynamic duo, establishing a sexual network, with Lester at its head as the emperor of a sexual empire reaching across America and Sarah as his chief courtesan. It it is clear that Lester sees his connection with Sarah as a long term relationship. Yes, it is based on sex, on sexual conquest, but it is still this new thing in his life a “relationship” with a “girlfriend” towards whom he exhibits actual feelings. I think Don is thinking this way, or why include this from 29: Shhhh. Hush now, babe.” Lester shook his head and straightened his face. He cleared his throat, and his face morphed back to his usual intense expression. Just for a second, Sarah felt like he had shown her the real Lester. The one behind the mask he usually wore. But now that door had swung closed…”. Here, it seems to me, Don is giving us a glimpse of Lester’s real feelings, or why would Mr Silver include such a detail? The internal logic of the story and the writing/scenes that power it forward, are moving in the direction of a strong L&S relationship, of that I have no doubt.
