Dev Update #24 - Initial Combat Update Details

Hey Everyone!

We’re back after last week’s Major Update! You’ve all been doing an excellent job of absolutely devastating the local ecosystems now that Hunting has been released, great work everyone!

We'll release a survey in next week's Dev Update to collect all your feedback.

Now that we’ve got Hunting in your hands, we’re ready to talk about the next Major Update. We’ve been hinting around the edges of this for a while, but yes - the next Major Update will include Combat (and a whole lot more). Let’s take a look at that now.

👀Combat and lots more - Major Update preview

We’ve been talking about our progress on Combat (and all the skills that rely on it) for quite a while now, so we’re incredibly excited to be able to say that yes, for sure, Combat will be in the next Major Update.

Combat is currently in a state for us to begin internal testing, content importing and balancing. Due to the size of Combat, and everything around it, this is going to be a lengthy process.

The release of Combat will include these Combat Skills:

Those who have been following our Dev Updates would know there’s a few non-Combat Skills sitting in the prototype phase that were waiting on Combat mechanics to finalise. Now that Combat is in a ready state to internally test, we can begin implementing those features.

The non-Combat Skills we are aiming to release alongside Combat include:

We’re not done yet - The addition of Combat will also bring the Equipment & Toolbelt system to the game, allowing you to finally equip Items to boost your character’s strength. There will be a whole lot of equippable Items that will benefit non-Combat Skills.

It will also a host of UI updates, QOL changes, balance fixes, and much more. All of these additions, along with the systems needed to support them, will be arriving together in what we’re calling " The [ENTER COOL UPDATE NAME HERE] Update".

Planning to add THIRTEEN new Skills in a single update is crazy to think about, and is most definitely a task Malcs is going to regret diving into.

We’ll go into more detail on these skills, and the systems that surround them, as we get closer to the update. Speaking of, when is the update coming?

The short answer is that we don’t know, but expect it to take some time. While the majority of this new content is now in a “playable” state for internal testing, we know from experience that it can be a long journey from “test-ready” to “Alpha-ready”. We’ll keep you all in the loop in these weekly posts, and over on Discord. Bear with us - this update is going to be worth the wait.

It says y'all will "add THIRTEEN new skills in the next update", but only 12 skills were listed (8 combat, 4 non-combat). Was that a typo, did I miss a skill elsewhere in the post, or is there gonna be a secret skill? I'm hoping for astrology, but I imagine that'd come in pretty late. In any case, take y'all's time, the hunting update is sick.
