Alien 3 (1992) | Full Length Reaction

We are watching David Fincher's Alien 3, a grim and dark finale to this trilogy.

We know this is a film that is far from universally loved, so let us know your thoughts on this one, and whether you'd like to see us continue the Alien movies.

This has been recorded in a watch-along format. You will need your own copy of the movie/tv show.

As Gene Parmesan commented above, if you're a fan of the Alien franchise there's yet a whole avenue of films to continue down; and as the series moves on from Ripley's story, it's still fun to see how each film connects to the others, and how the story(and history) of the Xenomorph is expanded upon in each movie. Heck, you guys have already done the first two Predator movies and now the first three Aliens, so if you wanted to, you could friggin' take both series all the way [baby] and, after the movies Gene Parmesan commented above(Alien 4, Prometheus, Covenant, and Romulus), there are the two "crossover" movies, "Aliens vs. Predator"(2004) and "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem"(2007). Then over on the Predator side, after Predator 2 you'd have "Predators"(2010), then "The Predator"(2018, written and directed by Shane Black who played the character Hawkins in the original Predator movie). Then as others have commented you have "Prey"(2022) which is interesting for not only being a prequel, but it takes place 300 years ago and focuses on a single tribe of Comanche Native Americans and received praise for its historically accurate and authentic depiction of the Comanche tribe. The filmmakers even wanted to film the movie in the Comanche language(which of course makes the most sense, logically), but the studio wanted the actors speaking English, the more "marketable" choice. However, the studio did allow them to record a whole language track in Comanche, which can be found by either switching the audio track, or finding the "Comanche language version," depending on if you're streaming it or watching the DVD. They got all the actors to come back to the sound booth to record their characters' dialogue in the Comanche language; it's a beautiful language that is, obviously, mostly a dead one now. On top of that, instead of trying to hire a movie star, they prioritised hiring an all-Native-American cast(for the Native American characters), which is cool. By the time you've finished with all that it will surely be November or later, which means two more Predator films will have materialised for you to see: "Predator: Killer of Killers" comes out this June(an animated film of three short stories, each about a humans/Predator encounter in a different era of human history); and "Predator: Badlands" comes out in November, and continues the "main" story line. And then FINALLY - jumping back over to Aliens - by November we should also have all 8 episodes of "Alien: Earth," which takes place two years before the original Alien movie, and will be the first TV series based on the Alien franchise(or the Predator franchise, for that matter). That would be crazy if you aimed to complete the entire Alien and Predator franchises(regardless of whether or not you record your reactions!). It would be an insane personal journey.

Appreciate the summaries Gene! Weโ€™re still undecided as to whether to continue the series or leave it as a trilogy, so itโ€™s good food for thought for us ๐Ÿ˜Š

I think you hit the nail on the head with why this movie didn't go down so well with fans of the first two, especially starting the movie with Newt and Hicks being dead. It was too big a swing in tone to handle for most, but I think what this movie with Ripley's story is really special. Its very rare that you get an epic trilogy that leans so heavily into the tragic vibes in the third installment, and I think it fit the character very well. The one thing I think is a bit unquestionably bad are the visual effects for the alien. If you watch the behind the scenes it turns out its not even CGI, its a puppet that they composite into the shots, but the lighting is so off on the model that it looks like bad CGI. I think the idea of showing the full body alien for the first time in the trilogy was a great idea, and the feral design looked awesome. Its a shame they bungled the effects (even by early 90's standards) cause it could've looked awesome and I think it would have saved the film a lot of hate. As for the rest of the Alien movies, here is my quick no spoiler summary of where they take the franchise: Alien 4 (Resurrections): The last Ripley related film, tries to bring back the action tone of the second film, but is a lot more comic book goofy. Most people ignore this one because it kinda messes with the perfect bookend to Ripley's story, but its a bit of dumb fun imo, very skippable though. It does have a young Winona Rider though, sooooo.... Prometheus and then Covenant - Ridley Scott (director of the first Alien) reboots the franchise and goes waaaay bigger in scale. Tone is more epic and mysterious, a lot more focused on lore and world building than on character/plot. This was designed to be a prequel trilogy to the original trilogy, and Ridley Scott says he's still working on the last one even though it hasn't been officially announced. I think you guys would probably love these. Romulus - the most recent installment returns the franchise to its horror roots and acts as a psuedo remake of the original trilogy, very similar vibes to the first 2. Well liked because it took the series back to basics, but it has a bit too much fan-service to truly stand out on its own imo. Visual pleasure though, definitely worth a watch eventually.
