Arrival (2016) | Full Length Reaction

Hey everyone! This week's movie night is 'Arrival' (2016).

This was the winner of our Sci-Fi Poll back in November, and wow, you guys know how to pick them!

This was an amazing movie, fascinatingly different from any other sci-fi we've seen! We hope you enjoy our reaction!

This has been recorded in a watch-along format. You will need your own copy of the movie/tv show.

Now you know why this won the poll, truly one of the most unique and beautiful sci-fi films ever made. Amazing stuff Niamh, what a call that early in the film. And I also agree with your emotional interpretation of the ending. How could you in one moment experience the joy of your beautiful child and then decide not to bring them into existence? Now that she has access to all the happiness her child brings her, how can she emotionally choose to give that up? Its a bittersweet sacrifice in a way, but an inspiring one. As for how the time stuff could actually work, its all very speculative since non-linear time isn't something we can comprehend, but the circular loop does imply determinism. Its the philosophical theory that says because our universe depends on the laws of physics and that all our choices are just atoms in our brain reacting in accordance with those laws... really there are no choices, and everything is playing out the only way it can based on those physical laws. The science version of fate essentially. I know you watched the first Matrix, and that series deals with determinism philosophy too. There's a line in the first one that sums it up nicely, where The Oracle says, "You're not here to make the choice, you've already made it. You're here to understand why you made it." I've always liked that thought as a way to explain Louise's experience in Arrival. Future her has already 'chosen' to have her child, but it takes her experiencing those moments of happiness to understand why she chose to go down that path. That's just my 2 cents, thanks for spurring a reviewing! Its great when a movie is so layered that knowing the twist doesn't make it any less special to watch. Looking forward to the next one👋

Thanks for videos! Something awesome to watch with you guys with the upcoming snowstorm about to hit. It's so good and I agree, Denis along with Nolan has my favorite style and visuals. It is also so frustrating because it shows exactly how humanity would act in this situation. Like complete selfish toddlers, and that's kinda saddening.
