Fun Irish facts about SPR: Many of the soldier extras in the movie were played by Irish Defence Forces (who also played extras in Braveheart)! Also, the Omaha Beach landing scene was filmed in Ballinesker Beach (because the actual Omaha Beach in France is now a protected historic site). As for Niamh's question about whether a mission like saving Private Ryan is likely, the answer is no. But not because the US Army doesn't send last surviving sons home. They do (see the Sole Survivor Policy; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sole_Survivor_Policy). It would just have been unlikely to send 8 guys on a wild goose chase. They would have radioed all the scattered airborne units to try to find Ryan and tell him to report to home base. Looking forward to Band of Brothers some time in the near future!
