Exclusive Tutorial: Let’s build a Tool! (session 01) 🛠️

Hi Creative Coders,

I hope you are alll doing good! ✌️

This week I want to share a first video tutorial with you. As you know, I am currently developing a course on building tools with p5.js and this video is some kind of an improvised sprint throught the whole topic. It is covering many different aspects of it. Most importantly: Implementing UI elements like sliders, buttons and text fields, and I binding their data to the sketch. It is not perfect and the whole video setup was super improvised, since I am traveling right now, but it helped me a lot to understand the right way to explain all these things in the upcoming course.

As always: I am curious about feedback: Please share questions and ideas here in the comments!

Warm greets, ☀️

Tim

PS: I’ll move back to my hometown Paderborn in Germany in November of this year. Barcelona is amazing and I’ll keep my connections and teaching commissions there, but I also learned that I need a calmer place to live. Barcelona is very exhausting. When I am back, I am planning to set up a nice video studio. I’ll share more about this soon.

Hi Jason, wow, thanks a lot, I love to hear that. You could perfectly use that typesystem by MuirMcNeil to create really cool, expressive systems with p5.js. Let us know when you have something to show! 💪

A few years ago I tried to create a web-based tool as part of a branding exercise for the design school I was teaching at (inspired by your p5 studio!) It uses MuirMcNeil's Two Type system. I never finished refining it because (A) I didn't have the skill and (B) I wanted to style the interface but didn't know how to combine CSS with the p5 editor. Really glad you're making this course and hope I can pick this project up again https://editor.p5js.org/HATH/full/D2PqGxRXh

Hi Jayke, that's great, if anything is confusing, please share your questions here or on Discord.

Great first session ! I was thinking about moving into doing more custom design tool creation but don't have a ton of experience with that yet, especially UI elements, so looking forward to the rest of the course :)
