Fort Construction

A lonely fort in the forest built by a small group of settlers. They must be afraid of something because they grubbed up the trees around the palisade and look out for intruders at night. Every guard is a guard challenge - people complain that they hear strange voices and sometimes also see fires burning in the forest...

What is lurking in the forest? Why is work progressing so slowly? Are recent cases of wildlife attacks just a coincidence?

The sound of construction can be heard from afar - the small group of settlers is building up a fort in the middle of the woods.

Heavy armored guards spot you first, and approach you with hands on their swords, but when they see humanoid faces the tension visibly leaves their faces.

- Travelers? It’s unlikely that someone goes that deep into the woods. But come in, be our guests. We will find you something to do!

The trees around the palisade are grubbed up, so the field of view is bigger - it’s very helpful at night, because lights from the fort reach further.

- I hope the smoke we’ve seen yesterday was your fireplace or something, you are traveling from the south, aren’t you? The last city is that way if I remember well…

Builders are working all the time - cutting wood, strengthening the walls, only the small part of the people is designated to build houses or storages.

It looks more like a camp for soldiers than a new settlement, why is it so?

- I don’t think we can openly talk about it, but who cares. We are all tired and the person who pays us, visit this place very rarely. As you see we are building a fort here. We were told it’s needed, because some bandits are living in this woods and with a new settlement here we can prevent them from smuggling weapons, people and stop other illegal activities.

But right after the first house was built something changed. The nights got darker, and we started to hear terrifying screams when the moon came out. At first we thought the animals were very active in this area, but we haven’t seen a single deer or wolf in a radius of a thousand feet from here.

Later the random fires were bursting in the forest, but when we went there during the day we couldn’t find any sign of it.

Many of us are traumatised, so we’ve decided to cut the trees in the small area around the fort. Just to distance ourselves from the woods. If you are going to stay for the night you’ll see why the walls are so tall and strong. I don’t want to know what’s lurking in the dark.
