✏️ Draw Like a Pro: Comparative Measurement 📐

Drawing accurately from reference/observation is super important for getting good. One method I swear by is called 'comparative measurement.' Basically, it's a fast technique that helps you get proportions right by comparing different parts of your subject to each other. Let's break it down:

Step-by-Step Guide to Comparative Measurement

1. Choose Your Reference:

Find a reference image you’re excited about. Pick something with clear shapes and silhouette—this will make the process smoother.

-I picked this image because it excites me very much

2. Identify Key Points:

Start by identifying a few key points on your reference. These could be the top and bottom of your subject, the width of the head, the length of an arm—whatever stands out.
-In my example, I found the top of the head, tail tip, and tip of the cool boots.

3. Measure and Compare:

Lightly sketch some lines as measuring tools. Measure one part , Then compare this measurement to other parts of the image, observing the angles you see.
-Here are some observations I made in my own example:,
-top of the head is far left, slightly up from tail position. notice the angle that these two points make
- the top of the head is far up and slightly left of the boots point.
-BONUS: (Try to imagine more points, and come up with as many of these as you can! Even when ur not drawing, this is a great exercise if ur waiting for the train or sm)

4. Transfer Measurements to ur canvas:

Begin to lightly mark these measurements on ur canvas. Keep comparing and adjusting as you go. This will help you maintain accurate proportions and prevent your drawing from getting skewed.

5. Refine Your Drawing:

Once I have the basic proportions down, I’ll draw a cleaner line pass on top! Keep using comparative measurement to ensure everything stays in proportion and even explore stylizations!

Quick Tips:

  • Consistency: Always measure from the same distance and angle to maintain accuracy.

  • Check Your Angles: Draw lines to check angles… I do this alot myself.

  • Practice Makes Perfect: The more you u exercise this, the more intuitive it will become (It gets easier, I promise guys).

Try this out in your next drawing session. It's an amazing way I’ve improved accuracy and built confidence in my drawing skills with. Let me know how it works for you!
