Video: How to paint Red Cloaks and Cloth

Hey everyone, today's video will be on painting red cloaks and cloth. Tomorrow there will be another new video on painting faded checkers and goff checks!

Going forward my goal is to be creating weekly videos on specific topics like this, as well as longer videos where I will paint full miniatures. This way I can hopefully create more varied content that's also useful to more people.

Let me know what you think and if you have any topic suggestions for these shorter format videos!

I have also been considering creating some PDF's (if that would actually be useful for folks)

Still to come this month is the Starborne Part 2, as well a surprise video and also a Wolfguard Terminator. Hoping to get to start the Lion as well soon, but lots to get done in between.

Have a great week!
- Dave

Only recently subbed. This was the first video I've watched and it was exactly what I was after. The guidance in the video is so useful, I'm really pleased I did subscribe.

This was really good Dave. Good to get your insight and experience. Is it preferable to use a medium to make glazes vs water?

This might help with the smoke: https://www.patreon.com/posts/how-to-paint-2-68411949?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_fan&utm_content=join_link

Glazing tips in this video are really helpful as is the guide on placing the final highlights. Love how you are blasting these out atm dude! For a future vid would you consider blending between two different colours - i.e white to dark blue/black using sotek, stegadon and incubi for the transitions (totally not relevant to nighthaunt or anything) :D

Seeing the paint on the pallet helps (i find) as im still trying to get the sweet spot for dilution, i am aware it can take a looooooong time to finese that, but having visual reference helps

rhys vokes

Outstanding Video love the effect, both long and short form video are good, as is the idea of fundamentals in the future, must be pointed out the music works really well (even though synthy music isnt my normal choice)

Great video. Your patreon continues to be an invaluable source. An idea, it would be really interesting to see you talk about already painted 'eavy metal minis. Discuss design decisions, point out use of techniques or differences in Forgeworld painting styles etc. Thanks for continuing to put out such great content.

Luke Arnold

Love the idea of shorts built around common features on models that serve as a canvas for specific techniques

Sam Dapper

Everything you put out is incredibly helpful and great to watch, Dave, so more of any type of content is always appreciated. More shorts would be great, the more different colour combinations the better. One thing that helped me out immensely was Darren’s (now possbly infamous) White Scars video, where he showed and discussed highlight options for warm, neutral, and cold whites before he started, and then explained how you might use the others as he went along. Also, … Hydra Dominatus..?

The shorter vids are a great idea to fill in space between bigger projects. One idea for a shorter tutorial would be the Staff and burning magical smoke (and glowing eyes) of the Orruk Shaman. You’ve done one before (and I’m pretty sure you have a spare staff since you had to order a second copy to replace a missing part lol) and I don’t really think there’s any tutorials out there that cover something like that (at least to the quality you did it on your own Shaman.)

VVenture

Great video!! Keep the content coming. PDF guides would also be a great resource.

Daniel Repo

Loving these smaller format videos. Such universal skills are vital

Another banger! This one was amazing Dave! I like this shorter video format along with the longer traditional videos. I've been struggling with painting these kind of organic textures such as cloaks and cloths etc. so this video was well appreciated :) I would love to see more videos on different kinds of cloths and cloaks and one other thing I've really struggled with, is painting horses so I would really appreciate a video on that at some point :) Thanks again for the great content!

I've been struggling with painting red fabric in a way I like on my Skaven so this is very helpful because I like the vibrancy of the red. I like the shorter video format for things like this because sometimes it's hard to set aside 30+ minutes to watch a video, but you still provided enough instruction (and all the paint mixes and consistencies) so that as long as someone isn't completely new to painting they can still replicate it.

Michael

I think short videos are a great idea to reduce repetitive work. There are actually many identical materials (maybe only slightly changed) on the miniature. PDF is also helpful for me.

CappuccinoJava

outstanding! thanks Dave!

Matteo Orlandi

Thanks Dave, I really love the idea of having fundamentals video such as this one. Awesome! <3

Bertrand Bloc'h (bbl)

Thank you! Yes fundamentals videos have been in the works for a while they just require a bit of planning, but that's definitely something I want to get done in the next couple of months

Infernal Brush

Well this red cloak tutorial is smashing for my Wolves. Eventually I’ll work up to the rugged leather if GSC. Still have the white dwarf article from Max.

Stratto

Thank you Ross! Yeah thats a great idea, infact I've been trying to source the tongue for the squigs so I can recreate it, however maybe there's another part that would do the trick.

Infernal Brush

Thank you Valerio!

Infernal Brush

Thank you John! Some good suggestions!

Infernal Brush

Thanks Stratto. Sounds like I need to do a video on Black cloaks, Jonathan was asking the same question above!

Infernal Brush

Thanks Jonathan You could start with grey and glaze it down however normally I would just start from black and then highlight up, perhaps starting with a very dark grey like corvus/eshin and black mix and then slowly work up into a midtone grey. You could also go slightly warmer or colder with this and maybe add some scratches and weathering depending on the look you want. Check out these 2 videos they both have different ways of painting black cloaks https://youtu.be/ht5nZSOFGow?t=1686 https://youtu.be/rGkTy7RewXc?t=599

Infernal Brush

Thank you both, I really appreciate the feedback! I am always working to improve my content and get faster at the editing process which is the one thing that tends to slow me down. But I am getting much quicker now.

Infernal Brush

Keep up the great work, would love a fundamentals series in which you can show specific skills and outline good practices assignments. As for the longerform videos, I wouldn't mind them to be cut into pieces or separate episodes.

dmn

Yeah warhammer plus is an absolute joke. The content that you get from them you can get anywhere on YouTube for free and more frequent. I subbed to Dave's patreon and i was a bit apprehensive, but his content is amazing!

Rough Rider Miniatures

Awesome! General skills for different items is always good. Be it swords, cloaks, weapons, gems etc. The long form videos are great as you get to see the entire process and how you pick the colours and your thought processes, but short videos of specific things is really useful too.

Rough Rider Miniatures

PDFs would be amazing!

Ramon Oliver Sanchez

Superb man. Gonna use this for my Silver Skulls robes. Would love to see how you did that slobbery part of the Squigs or even something like warm, cool and neutral whites.

Hellglazer Painting

very useful, thanks Dave

Valerio Proietti Checchi

I enjoy both formats of full painted minis and looking at specifics like this. Short videos for things like painting skulls, parchment types, neutral black for things like weapon casings would be very helpful and a few different types of bases (I know you have covered some of these in your full mini vids). Its finding that sweet spot of things that carry across a lot of different minis and ranges.

John Fields

"I'm going to start with a size 3 brush" DAM SON! Let's go big - hehe. Great vid love it and thank you for sharing. What would change for a black cloak on a golden armoured figure 😏 Got some Custodes that need some black drapes.

Stratto

Massively useful video, it's a stunning finish! I wonder for a Black cloak how much would change? Would you start with a midtone grey and shade in black or start from black and just add to it like the highlight stages on this red? Just asking you know, it's not like got a mini to paint for a Leviathan competition or anything... 😉😁

Jonathan Harman

I just want you to know how freakin' great your Patreon is! I subbed to Warhammer+ for Masterclass and you - one dude - produce far more and far better content. I realize they just lost a presenter and one is sick but c'mon 3 videos in 6 months? You have paying cunsumers. Anyway, it blows my mind how good at this you are. The whole thing, not just the painting.

Sean Gilbert

Awesome sauce!!! Looking forward to these mini content vids!!🤘
