Some news from the Godot project!

Hello, dear Godot Engine Patreons!

It's been a long time since we last posted here! As you may already know, we recently released Godot 4! It's been a massive undertaking by thousands of contributors, and we can't wait to see what you can create with it :)

We've been a bit quiet on this platform, and we owe you an explanation. Simply put, we’ve been focusing so much on finalizing Godot 4.0 over the past couple of years that neither Juan nor Rémi (who both manage this account) managed to prioritize communicating on this platform. We did, and still publish frequent blog posts about our progress on the Godot website, which you’re all invited to follow. For example, you might be interested in this post about our new faster release cycle after 4.0.

Still, we’re aware that many of you appreciate getting updates through Patreon’s mailing list, so we’ll try to bring back some content here. You can expect mostly short posts listing important blog posts and release announcements.

We’re also aware that we could provide more details about the financial state of the project, and how we allocate our funds. Everything we receive is used to hire contractors to work on the engine (which is what enabled us to release such a massive Godot 4.0 this year, and to make steady progress to prepare Godot 4.1 already), but we’ll have a detailed blog post in the near future with more insights into the actual budget of the project, and how we prioritize our spending.

On the topic of funding, we’ve started work on our own fundraising platform hosted by the Godot Foundation, similar to what is used by Krita and Blender. Patreon has been a big help to get where we are, but it doesn’t scale so well with the growing needs of the project, and the combination of its fees plus charging VAT on donations means that a very significant chunk of your donations are lost in the process. With our own platform, we’ll be able to collect donations directly, so we can make sure that every cent you contribute goes straight into making the Godot Engine better.

Last but not least, we want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude for your support. Thanks to your contributions we were able to make it through the development of our biggest major release so far, which was 4 years in development! We're forever thankful for your trust in Godot and the amazing community that surrounds it.

Let us know if you have any questions! Thank you.

All good, I will be switching over to the new funding scenario for next month. Thank you creating the next greatest software since Blender. BTW, I really do love UI in Godot, it is very compact and snappy. Like any UI could use some tweaks, but all in all it looks and works well to get work done.

Thanks so much for the Godot engine, for me here in sub Saharan Africa, this made my dreams come true because with our poor internet connectivity and poor technology infrastructure it’s now possible to really make a game after having many failed attempts to do the same in Unity, I’ll be happy to donate towards Godot for making this possible.

I have a question is Godot working on Ray Tracing.

+1 from me! :)

Thanks for all the hard work! You all rock and the engine is getting better all the time!

When developing your own fundraising platform, make sure to include PayPal as payment method for people like me who neither have nor want a credit card 😃

To be honest I don't want extra info for Patreons, I give you the little money I can for the good of the people, keep the great work my friends, you are making history!

Kiba Gasteiz

Time to spam HR then! Awesome!

We actually onboarded the Godot Foundation on Benevity a couple of weeks ago! Not sure about the details and how it works yet, but hopefully we'll have this documented in the near future :)

On the topic of fundraising platforms, might I suggest you also add existing platforms to your targets? My previous employer used Benevity and donations matched 100% up to $1K/year and my current employer will start using Benevity soon (not sure about matching). This could be a significant bonus.

> We've been a bit quiet on this platform I wouldn't worry about it. We get updates where it matters: in the engine. You guys are doing 🔥very🔥 good work, so thank you!
