I was looking at a YouTube video by a woman that was suggesting to use always the same camera, to create a symbiosis, and make its use second nature.
Only this way, she say, you can forget about it and concentrate on photography alone, creating the best pictures you can.
The 3 photos of Quinn selected for today (1 more on regular social media and 1 on DA Subscriptions), have been shot during November 2022 on the Leica SL2-S, a camera I've been using for some years and have become familiar with.
But in 2025 I not only stopped using the SL2-S, but I also introduced 2 new cameras, the Fujifilm GFX 50S II, and the Leica M10 Monochrom, doing exactly the opposite of what this YouTuber was advising.
I'm sure she is right in many ways, for example during my first shooting with Maria, I must confess I was struggling with the new GFX, and my performances were not stellar.
On the other hand, I think it is important not to rest on our laurels, but to keep our creative juice flowing with new challenges, giving nothing for granted.
During 2025 I managed to master both the new cameras, and get some good results with them, changing my point of view and forcing myself to work (and think) in a different way.
And now, in 2026, I can safely say I do not entirely agree with this YouTuber and that, in my experience, changing gear is just another way to push our boundaries, growing our skills in new and unexpected directions.
Now I have 2 new dedicated tools in my drawer, tools I can select every time I need to perform a specific task.
Like the Nikon D810, I got back using several times during 2025 because it was the right tool for a specific job, I'm sure the Leica SL2-S is going to find its way back inside my camera bag soon enough, and it is going to be like meeting with an old friend!
