I have a 1970s function generator from SWTPC (your big old computer). It's voltage controlled (linear) and generates square waves with variable duty cycle, triangle/ramp, and converted sine. I've seen articles about using it for synth VCOs and I have some chips but haven't built an oscillator with it yet. *Hey, I really liked your interview with the maker (and everything else you do)!*
