What it reminds me of the most are those DVDs that self-destruct after 48 hours once you break the seal on the packaging(there was also Divx, a disc made by Circuit City where you could only watch them if you paid for a subscription service and once it got discontinued in 2001 those discs all became worthless): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flexplay A Break Key anime would be pretty lit though. This was definitely one of the factors in Upper Deck's demise(along with the whole "counterfeiting Yugioh cards thing")

I also looked on in horror when I saw the simple, if dumb concept of BreaKey, and realized there were 10 more minutes left in the video.

Strategy along with the self destruction could have created a genuinely tense situation where losing felt like not an option. But the fact that its luck based means that you don't really care either way what the results are.
