I grew up in Texas and it wasn't until college that I learned anything beyond Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima (and the bombing of Hiroshima, they just skimmed over Nagasaki, was told in the most sympathetic way towards America's actions). In fact in high school you easily could've thought we were only at war with Germany with how little they discussed Japan and Italy. So I do believe a lot of Americans don't necessarily understand the significance of that flag. Not an excuse, because honestly you should research the iconography being used before getting it tattooed on your body, but they really do try to keep us ignorant by downplaying or just plain omitting history.
