CHRISTMAS CAROL 9 (II): THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE

"You know, I may have a little confession to make about my girlfriend."

Lily’s blood ran cold.

The assistant leaned in, intrigued. "Oh?"

Carol’s fingers tightened around Lily’s hand as if reminding Lily not to bolt. Lily’s Plan A—run—had already failed. Her Plan B, the newer one that kept showing up lately, was to hope the ground swallowed her.

"Lily is new to all of this," Carol said. "Let’s say she’s had a very big change."

"A change?"

"She used to go by another name. Liam."

The assistant looked from Carol to Lily, curiosity turning to surprise as the meaning settled. "Oh," the assistant exclaimed. "Oh! I would have never guessed." Lily’s heart pumped so hard she went lightheaded. "You look very convin—I mean, very pretty, uh, girl," she told Lily.

Lily forced out a humiliating nod because nodding was easier than speaking and risking her voice doing that higher crack again. Carol gave a satisfied little hum, as if Lily had answered correctly.

"That’s beautiful. Happy holidays to you both."

Carol let the assistant guide them toward the counter. At the register, Carol told Lily to pay. Lily fumbled in her handbag for her wallet, and then her credit card—clumsy fingers, still unaccustomed to her girly accessories.

She pulled the card out. It was girly, and under the name of Lily Carter. Little hearts dotted the i. She remembered the placard with the same name on her apartment door.

The assistant waited politely. "My, look at her credit card’s design. What a faggot he must have been. I can see why she has transitioned. Maybe this blonde bitch made her. She seems very proud of her girlfriend," she thought.
