He’s such an enigma at this point too. For instance why is he even at this university that seemingly is not a focused running school? Why instead did he get together this ragtag group of people? Also I’ve always loved that lil moment with the guys outside the bathhouse this ep. Kakeru’s rant could have easily spiralled into ‘high school bs’ but instead the twins just simply say “what’s your problem?” For me it’s just really refreshing to have characters that feel that just a bit more mature than your typical anime.

2026-02-28 09:02:26 +0000 UTCJust bought some running shoes. Funnily enough for some reason I got a side stitch walking into the shoe store. Not symbolism, that really happened 😅

2026-02-28 03:57:58 +0000 UTCAll the Prince scenes this episode crack me up. Haiji's diabolical "Go!" while holding the moving boxes. The cuts to Prince just dead in the grass. His shirt that says "Why" (which is how I felt every time my alarm went off for morning cross-country practice). I liked your comparison of the butterflies to circling vultures, haha. It's notable how much confidence Haiji has not only in his dream but in these nine guys specifically. Obviously running in the Ekiden is important to him for some reason, and he's been working toward it for years. Most people in such a position would not include somebody like Prince in their plans. Even a poor runner would be an improvement over Prince. Prince has been living at the Aotake for a year, so Haiji has had time to find (catfish, blackmail, whatever) a replacement if he really wanted to. And Prince isn't the only one; he's just the most egregious. Most of these guys are unlikely choices. Yet Haiji is adamant that he is going to make it to the Ekiden with these nine guys. You could argue that if Haiji were really serious about trying to qualify for the Ekiden, he would have done everything he could to upgrade his roster. Makes you wonder what's really important to him about his dream and why, and whether it could be achieved with a lesser goal/target.
