Takopi's Original Sin 1x5 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

I agree wholeheartedly 😂 I imagine many people if not all people who watch media go through that stage of rooting for the villain or antagonist (or I guess protagonist) doing atrocious things . Or extreme nihilism or whatever it may be. It's just one of the stages and that's fine. In general my idealistic version of the world is to move away completely from arguments based on name calling or personal attacks, and instead to focus purely on ideological debate. I think this is scary at first because if we open up the door for everyone to say what they think publicly, there's the fear that people will get taken in by terrible ideas (so better to just nuke their identities with name calling and personal attacks). And the danger there is real, but that danger is exacerbated by that very system. If people were to be exposed to more ideas and debate and there were rules about discourse, I think people would adjust to that standard and be better thinkers for it.

That's really interesting. I hadn't heard that about Finland. I think there's so much to say about this... I do feel that I got the message growing up that the point of life was to be happy. This seems like an issue for several reasons: - happiness is an emotion, emotions are maybe the least controllable things we have, so to rely on it means sacrificing yourself to the whims of chance (maybe that's why there's that connection with fortune you mentioned). - not being happy means you're failing so it's harder to be happy - the actions that are the best for us are not always correlated with immediately happiness. In some situations they're in conflict - advice and messaging towards happiness overlaps / skews with advice towards hedonism. But hedonism probably doesn't actually make us happy (long term) and misses other things that are arguably more enduring and important. Happiness is great but there has to be something else as a guideline or purpose that is more reliable and higher reaching

One thing I've noticed is that even on Earth, a lot of things are octopus themed, like the email address... There were a few other things I noticed but they're not coming to mind

You're right, Happy Planet and giant Octomom seem ambiguous in their overall aims and systems, but that's a great point about the Garden of Eden. And perfect for Takopi who's biggest fault, if we can call it that, is complete blissful ignorance

“The world beyond the walls wasn’t what we dreamed of, and the pancakes weren’t even that good.” But I resonate with what you said about vacccinating against bad ideas. That’s something I thought about for a long time and I believe that’s why storytelling is so much more than a product for entertainment… it’s a vehicle for ideological immunization. You can simulate being in these extreme situations and think through them so when you have to face them yourself, you already have a reference or grounding. Or in a similar way, reflecting on a show might reveal a blind spot you didn’t know you had

I feel like "happiness" is kind of a nebulous concept and also one I have a weird relationship with. This has probably gone unmentioned from before but I come from a country that for some reason unknown to myself and many others from here keeps getting brought up as "the happiest country in the World". I do not know who surveys this or how such surveys are done and it is something that very much intrigues me because this idea is not something that myself or locals necessarily agree on. Just because you can figure out the country by just googling the worlds happiest country I guess I can say that I am referring to Finland which is where I'm from. I think the biggest joke answer that people here give to explain the phenomenon is that all the sad people kill themselves which to be fair we do have a suspiciously high suicide rate for supposedly the happiest country in the World. Though I and many others probably most subscribe to the theory that the people here just don't have that high of a bar for "happiness". To be fair even linguistically we don't have an exact equivalent for "happiness". "Onni" which we use is can also refer to having luck or fortune which though similar doesn't really completely match in concept. Probably instead of saying "the worlds happiest country" what would make the most sense would be that we're the most "content". We're modest and don't necessarily complain about our live situations or strive for as much compared to other "western" countries. This is of course just one theory. Suffice to say I would not say I ascribe the "Happian" model of happiness from Planet Happy. Seems like quite a shallow and fragile system to me.

Covid being a background element is quite fitting as a direct grounding device, same as Monster Hunter. Still a bit shocking that it was half a decade ago already. “Nao-kun likes someone else.” Considering what her husband did, this is probably the worst thing for Marina’s mother to hear. It ties rather well into your example of generational snapping at kids, and to someone already as mentally unwell as Marina’s mom, it’s utter torment. The failure of Takopi in the eyes of his mother to bring someone back, if that is what it was, is especially interesting to me. Though my original theory was a little darker, with the thought being that Happians bring others to their planet for sustenance by using them to grow Happy Fruits, or that they transform them into Happians for reproduction, there seems to be more beneath the surface. There are literary similarities to the Garden of Eden, but even then there are things that don’t quite add up to me. I’m certainly interested in seeing more theories, and some of them involving cipers and anagrams of Takopi’s original name are fascinating, but I’ll wait until the final episode for some of them. Azuma does seem to be rather aggressive at the end, but that spark in his eye is rather noteworthy, given it’s a fragment of what Junya passed onto him in the ‘One-for-All’ sequence last episode, so perhaps not all hope is lost! 31:32 Except Junya, he’s always best boy no matter where we are in the timeline.

They are not allowed to board, they are both wearing the invisi-flower. What a downgraded Chappy. Shizuka ABSOLUTELY MURDERED Takopi. Teen Shizuka has "scary-looking eyes" (when she's working to wrap Azuma around her little finger). Plus, she already told him that he's all she (Shizuka) has which... well... lovebombing out of the blue is 9 times out of 10 a bad and manipulative thing. I'm not siding with the Dad, but he is 50% in the right, I think. 1) A runaway daughter you haven't communicated with for ? long shows up. 2) His other daughter is a 4-5 y.o. Not only is this not a conversation that you have on your doorstep, the younger one would probably not understand it much either. Well, ideally, you invite her inside the house and talk it out. Ehh, he may not have told his wife about him being divorced and with a daughter? I don't 100% understand the Happy Planet (HP) scene. Octomom (OM) basically says: "You coming back here alone is the greatest sin and for that you are banished" and "If you think that you must go back in time and do something that I don't understand the meaning of, then I will erase your memories" Based on these things I think that 1a. They are supposed to make their ward so happy that the former decide to go to Planet Happy with them (and since there are no humans there maybe they become Happians). 1b. Alternatively, the Happians always end up getting picked up by those with the worst lives and, perhaps, every ward ends up dead, so the Happians take their souls back to HP. 1c. Alternatively the Happians are not supposed to return to HP ever, and they either somehow sacrifice themselves for their ward's happiness or develop a bond and stay with them forever 2. HP and OM are very extremely authoritative and any deviation from the directive is unacceptable. The failure_? (coming back alone) and the disobedience_? (plan to go back and kill), how closely tied are they? It could be that they're two separate crimes, each with its own punishment (banishment, memory wipe). It's not clear. I don't think I even have to point out the similarities between this and the Garden of Eden. Everyone is living in supreme bliss and death is something they don't know. Takopi is doing something bad that he thinks is beneficial (IMPORTANT: both Marina and Shizuka wished for it, even if in passing, not really thinking about the consequences if it actually came to pass). The messenger's punishment is banishment. "Let's talk first" is permeating through the whole show. I'm sure there's more there but I'm not well versed enough to analyze further.
