Thank you! Yeah we live in Seoul 😁 I agree completely. We can sympathize, understand, or at the very least remember someone's humanity, and still at the same time oppose what they do. There's also the saying, hate the sin not the sinner, which I think gets to this idea nicely. And that's often is the most appropriate level to be dealing with the issue. What good is it to cast an categorical aspersion on someone's entire being? As opposed to addressing the specific problem or action at hand. Also that's really cool that it's Chika's VA. I had no idea

2026-01-18 03:59:57 +0000 UTCA piece of trivia + a comment, and a personal note: The actress for Marina is the same as Fujiwara Chika in Kaguya-sama. I don't know what else she's been in, but once I realized this I was really impressed by the range she's displayed in these two very different characters On your point at the end about responsibility: I think I'm pretty much in agreement there. A mistake a lot of people make is thinking the beliefs "that person did something terrible" and "it's a tragedy that they turned out this way" are incompatible. The first places all the blame on the perpetrator and doesn't allow one to think about the systems/circumstances that led to it, and how that could be corrected so something like this doesn't happen again. And of course, the other ignores personal responsibility which is equally misguided. And both in isolation will create more victims. It seems to be that people need to be more comfortable holding both, but that's more difficult and involves nuance while sadly the human brain prefers defaulting to black and white. This takes me back to Thors' message in VS: "There are no enemies. There is no one who deserves to be hurt." I think what he's getting at is what I'm saying here. Sure, maybe sometimes who need to inflict damage to someone if other options fail, but you can also at the same time be sad that it had to turn out that way and look for ways to avoid it next time. If everyone approached every conflict with the mindset "there are no enemies", we'd all be surprised how many problems that would smooth over out of the gate. Will we ever get there? Maybe not. But following a north star doesn't necessarily mean you'll ever reach it, just that you'll end up somewhere other than here. PS: I heard on your Kaguya video that you're married now, I was happy to hear that for you! I think the last time I tuned in was around a year ago for Re:Zero so that was a surprise! Are you still in Korea?

2026-01-17 18:31:04 +0000 UTCYeah that's a really interesting moment with Marina's mother. There's a lot going on at the same time. She didn't handle her relationship with her daughter well. Also she has actually lost her daughter forever and seems to recognize that subconsciously, so it's heartbreaking.

2026-01-16 20:37:22 +0000 UTCI really thought I was the only one thinking that Shizuka's manipulation tactics ('cause that's what she used on Azuma) might've been something she picked up from her mother. Yes, it seems VERY deliberate. And also, the "I don't wanna go to prison, let's hide the body and let's replace her with a clone" goes way beyond shock and emotional turmoil, if we use shock and emotional turmoil to justify her being glad at the death of Marina last episode. This is actually used in court as proof that you didn't act under emotional stress, the fact that you calmly took actions to hide the crime. Azuma is unlucky. I don't think he romantically liked Shizuka before. But he's got a "I'm useless, nobody counts on me" complex, and he met a "I trust you with my life, do this for me" manipulator. On a very personal note... I know that Azuma's Mother's tactics are probably not good but... my parents did similar things to me (at age 14-17 though, so it's probably a bit better). Not with a carrot incentive though, but the "If you're not giving 100% you won't score high enough for the university of your choice", "If you don't stop loafing and start reading you're gonna die on the streets impoverished" and "If you wanna go for something easier then say it so we don't pay for private tutors". When I got into Law School (lol), apart from the congratulations I also got a "But if you actually studied harder you'd have gotten to the Law School that required a higher score and it's closer to home, now you'll have to go live half the country away" I don't know, I guess carrot (I mean rewards) and subtle threats *might* work on students but .. it's a hard thing to balance and it's very dependent on the child. I, for example, have now developed a "Unless I'm giving it my 100% then it's probably not worth it to even try" which a lot of people also have. "Marina has every right to sue you". + The slapfest... as much as it is very sad and we feel empathetic towards Marina's Mom's tears at the end, what is it she's asking for? Does she want Marina back? Or does she want her Ally-Against-Father Marina? It's hard to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume the best when we've seen everyone acting like crap.

2026-01-16 19:09:20 +0000 UTCGod this show is so goooooood. It just has this way of toeing the line of absolute darkness and absurdity with really real character writing. These poor kids have no one to guide them so they are fumbling all over the place trying to figure shit out. Even though they're all doing bad things you really feel for them because you can understand where it comes from and know that it could have been different for them.

2026-01-16 10:27:22 +0000 UTCOh yeah Azuma is super relatable. I'm like, yeah of course you would in that situation 😅 Terrible. We really threw the kids into the forest with this one. It's not their fault but that doesn't mean they don't have responsibility or it's ok. One cool thing about this show so far is it really plays with those lines. It feels essential to tease out and separate into different elements for the analysis. Fault, responsibility, intention, awareness... Lots of slices

2026-01-16 02:47:49 +0000 UTCyeah. shizuka definitely atleast subconsciously has a manipulative side as well too. I do appreciate this show as a more nuanced portrayal of children and their varying maturity levels and in them also having the capacity for morally questionable acts just like adults do. of course then you can get into arguments there of it being more justified to defend children if they do such things like this because they're young and don't fully understand it but I think in this case it's pretty clear that for example shizuka very much understands that what takopi did was wrong but the benefit of no longer having to deal with marina outweighs that. I can definitely relate a bit to azuma being a shy little kid with glasses who'd do whatever their crush would ask them to do even though in this case it's being an accomplice to murder.
