Shizuka's selfishness is a great detail. For that matter we haven't learned Takopi's motivations, I suspect there's something there also. Turns out, they've all learned something from their parents. That's another big thing the kids have in common.

" :] There we go, we're learning :] .. 1-mississip.. -_- oh, no, we didn't learn anything -_-" ----- On a serious note, I think I have found the one thing every main character shares and, very likely, is the source of everyone's problems: They are all so f*ing selfish!! Shizuka's mother: She dislikes her ex-husband and even though she's got custody of Shizuka, she is living for herself. I won't claim I know anything about escorting but it certainly is one of those easy ways to make good money instead of, let's say, working at a warehouse. We can see her selfishness when she complains to Shizuka that the latter makes her life harder. Marina's Father: Easy to tell, he has marriage problems with Marina's Mother and he selfishly choose the worst (but easiest) route of living a double life. At least (?!?) he's doing it overtly. He doesn't care about his daughter. Marina's Mother: She dislikes her husband and she uses Marina to score points against or to coerce her husband to act a certain way (it's not working). That's pretty selfish of her, using her child. Teachers: I know that it wouldn't make a good story if an external force came and solved the problem, but we've seen this in so many many anime that I believe it's common knowledge and/or accepted in japanese society, that teachers selfishly refuse to stick out of the flock and get tangled in some problem. Shizuka: Yes, she is selfish. For one thing, the way she reacted at the end when Marina is killed. But also, in my opinion, the way she treats Chappy. Sure she loves him ... but in relation to herself. Chappy makes her life easier, Chappy is left for her by her father. Assuming she thought, in the first time loop, that Chappy went to live in a nice farm with her dad, she didn't think there was an option to seek him out, but instead hanged herself because now her life would be harder. >>EDIT: At 21:16 (reaction video time) IS SHIZUKA LOOKING AT TAKOPI WITH A "WON'T YOU DO ANYTHING?"-LOOK?!?! We can't tell for sure but it would fit the selfish tag and it would match with her reaction after the murder. All I'm saying is that it fits. Marina: Actually much less selfish than the rest, I think, but still. No matter how young she is, she knows that bullying doesn't help her Mom or her own situation, but she keeps doing it because at the moment she feels a little bit "happier". We haven't actually seen Marina do anything to cool off her parents. Think about it. Change up the selfish attitude of ANY one character of the above (aside from Shizuka). 1 person out of 5, ANY one, and this situation is over. Especially the adults, it is ridiculous how they don't understand that we live in a society where sometimes you have to stomach your personal issue for the greater good. Or at least find a harmless way to let it out. Example: This all stops the moment Marina's father gets a gym subscription. The classmate with glasses is the most selfless person in the show so far. Sure, we might find out that he likes Shizuka and he's helping her so that she notices him (I doubt it), but it's the only genuine concern for another person we have in this show.

2026-01-15 04:26:08 +0000 UTCSetting up the camera and the loop with such detail, only to wrench it away in that cathartic and sickening scene was rather horrific, but a great way of setting a somehow more hopeless tone than in episode one. I feel terrible for Marina, Shizuku, and Takopi. Each was broken in a new and awful way, all in a moment. I really liked your commentary, both for the food for thought on the corrupted nature of gleeful reactions to tragedy, and also how it was remarkably prescient.

2026-01-15 03:31:18 +0000 UTCI can't recall anything I've seen that has this wide of a range between look and feel. It's like South Park if South Park were a tragedy

2026-01-15 02:23:44 +0000 UTCyeah. I prewatched a few episodes after the first reaction and it's crazy they found a way to up the shockingness of the first one. Definitely a topic I haven't seen ran into much is child on child capital violence. Or I guess alien octopus child.
