2026-01-08 08:01:41 +0000 UTCThanks for the clarification. That makes more sense about Suirei and her motivations. The Jinshi / Shisui scratch scene and what follows is so crazy. It's very dramatic, but there was no reason I can see to have entertained it. I think she was already probably marked for death anyway given her flight from the palace.

By allowing Loulan to scratch him, Jinshi and Loulan understood she was ensuring she'd die, no pardon possible, or a different punishment. It also marred his "beauty", which was so very like his father's (grandfather's). Basen was disciplined for allowing it to happen because he's supposed to guard Jinshi's precious self with his life. Jinshi having gone off somewhere without Basen doesn't excuse Basen from shirking this responsibility (though a few punches to the face aren't all that bad, considering). This is also why Lihaku tried to keep Jinshi from going into the castle - they'd all be punished to some extent if Jinshi was hurt, no matter that Jinshi chose to endanger himself. Shishou...had some clever ideas to get what he wanted (or tried to) while also making it look good to the Imperial family/the country. He was clever in that he never let anyone know his true motives, kept on visibly supporting the Imperial family, and gained more and more renown in the realm. But yes, he lost any/all respect earned for his past deeds when he stood back and allowed Shenmei to ruin herself and the whole family. At some point, he had to admit to himself what she was doing, and then he only played along for the purpose of making sure he could take the public blame for everything while all the dregs of his out-of-contrrol clan were completely wiped out. Shenmei will not get the...notoriety for any of this. It will all be blamed on Shishou(which, to be fair, it should be because he let his wife run amok). Suirei. Sigh. I think it's easy to say she should never have participated in any of these schemes to clear the path for Loulan's eventual child to take over the throne. Killing off any potential heirs (Jinshi) had to be done for that to happen. Suirei is too traumatised by Shenmei and is loyal only to Loulan after being abused and manipulated for so long. I would guess she thought what she was doing was all for Loulan's future security as Empress (both secure in power and safe from her mother). Maomao has bruises from Shenmei smacking her with the fan a couple of times before she ended up in the taibon (that was only earlier this same day, wow).
