Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc Reaction Extended (shorter version below)

Comments

Me eating good food: "Fuck the city's great, can't imagine being a risk averse normie who isn't the protagonist of their own life" Me being eaten by cats and humans: "reality is cruel, why don't we have safety nets like the country where human dignity is respected" Great reaction man, idk how I missed this 2 months ago

OMG I MISSED THE NOTIFICATION when i saw this, honestly even before i saw this i thought “damn, goodwin would love this” i guess you were right, that a good date has a major near death experience. It’s really great to see how much you could glean from the last 10 minutes. When someone has their finger on the pulse of a piece of media, they are often able to intuit things in the future without much direct foreshadowing and i feel like this applies to you and chainsaw man. The animators clearly did a lot of flourishes and put a lot of passion into this, which i love. but it is more than just adding extra action and animation. it would kinda be disingenuous if the series was adapted 1 to 1. CSM is a series with a city mouse approach, so i’d be disappointed if they took the country mouse approach with the adaptation. I also feel like some people still get caught up in the pixie girl fantasy or “hot evil siren” with reze and don’t see a lot of the humanity that bleeds through. feels like i never stopped watching your content (will binge your apothecary diaries videos once i get around to watching the series 🤞)

The movie scene is still weighing on me, speaking of which. But I feel I can't fully make sense of it yet. One thing I was thinking later is that Reze's whole thing is a construct. She's the fake or wannabe country mouse. Makima crying here is (maybe?) a shocking display of honesty. And she seems to absolutely know who and what she is... There's no in between, she's all city mouse. Maybe something like that? Also it's fascinating to hear that the author was tormented by his own work. I'm not a writer but I imagine one of the challenges is how do you tell the story you want to / is reasonable to tell while also staying honest? There was a lot of palpable momentum to Denji and Reze leaving together. That wouldn't have felt contrived. But then... that's a big problem for the story. So what happens? Denji does what feels satisfying and natural, but gets knocked out and so that thread gets closed. But there's some weird unresolved kenetic energy there! He's probably referring to something different there, but that's what came to mind

Thanks!

How did I miss the Battle Royale reference! 😭 Great details, thank you

This movie has so many beautiful layers and metaphors hidden within it, it’s truly incredible. For me personally, the first half of the movie is my favorite. The action is great, but I think Chainsaw man does quiet moments so well. The scene where Denji cried with Makima in the movies was so full of meaning. I do wonder if Makima, maybe similar to Denji, wants to connect with people. She’s both so well liked and so hated in this verse it’s hard to put a finger on it, but I think it came as a shock to a lot of people that we saw her cry at all. It’s an interesting addition to her character. Also, the author Fujimoto’s commentary on this movie was too good not to add in here: “As an audience, I thought ‘Makima did something unnecessary.’ Then I was wondering, ‘Why didn’t this author let Reze and Denji meet?’, So I couldn’t sleep. It was a strange sensation of the questions from my own work coming back to haunt me.” Then, he also says “I like it when the protagonist and heroine don’t end up together and I want them to carry that weight forever.” This man is real interesting 😂

I really enjoy Reze's final line. Fujimoto could have done something sappy like, "To be honest... I really do like you" or something like that, but having her instead say "To be honest... I've never been to school either" is so fantastic-- evokes so many thoughts and emotions of what could have been, as well as compounding how similar they really are, and facilitates some retrospective on their earlier interactions.

it's good to be back. can't wait to watch your reaction to season 2!

Makima

Kenshi Yonezu (OST Composer) is just an absolute legend, man. I could really feel the Devilman Crybaby influence with this movie, in particular. Every single show he's worked on has had such an absolutely stellar score, while maintaining its own unique identity/sui generis.

The track you were wondering about with the electronic and chorus is approximately titled “Typhoon Devil” it’s also my favorite track. I saw this in theaters on a giant screen and the scene when the song came on, it was almost overwhelming.

I love how when Reze is singing her song in Russian we see Makima swaying her cup to the beat of the song as if she is listening to it, at the start of Reze going to the cafe she walks down the alley very much like a soldier and at the end she runs down it like a real person. I find it interesting how at the end the cafe owner says that Reze is from a different world than Denji and I disagree I the two are strikingly similar, they both had ruff childhoods and devil devils and she even her jokes where sexual like Denji in nature thought that could have just been her trying to relate to him more to draw him out, but I do believe the are a lot more similar than they are different and if Denji could end up becoming like her in the future if things go certain ways. The end is just such a downer with Denji left alone thinking Reze never came for him with her being murder behind his back while in his mind his mentality is just getting more and more skewed Here a link to a reel to other small details: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DSKus7XEZgL/?igsh=cjBkbXdzcng3OGhi Here’s a link to other movie references: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DSH1LOjkROQ/?igsh=MWNvZDE0dXo2czhyNQ==

The author Tatsuki Fujimoto just had an anthology of one shots animated called 17-26. Every episode was done by a different studio - would be a great bridge into the returning shows in January.
