Just here to say the that the Chainsaw Man movie is available digitally now and it will speak to you on a spiritual level. Need to catch up on my hero (i read the manga just not caught up on the episodes)

Chris Sharpe

I'm weirdly happy for you that Mineta was the one to say "We are here!", but maybe we should have seen it coming, after all, wasn't Mineta the one who basically forshadowed the whole "your weakness inspires me to do my best too" all the way back in S1 at USJ? You picked the Dark Horse and you won! I love that we start out with Aizawa, Aoyama and Hagakure, the three characters who didn't really get to contribute back during the getting Vigilante Deku back home fight(?), with this show, patience really is a virtue. Eventually, there will be a payoff and it will be glorious! Just how I loved that the now most inconsequential members from 1A, Sero, Sato and Ojiro were the first to show up for Deku and get their moment to shine! I'm torn on Bakugou showing up: On the one hand, it feels great in the moment and you're right, he would never miss this, but on the other hand, it breaks my suspension of disbelief, unfortunately. Dude literally died. If almost-died Uraraka has to sit out, then he should too, after all of that, I don't buy that he still had enough left to blast himself all the way over here. I think Tokoyami taking his place would work better for me, especially because he can fly and we don't even know what's so wrong with him that he has to sit it out? He looks mostly fine, so in the Manga, I was actually terrified that he had his Quirk stolen by AfO (there, we don't see what happens after the Mineta moment, it cuts away, and when we next see AfO, he's already on route to Shigaraki, so anything could have happened). I guess he wanted that final TodoBakuDeku Combo and I can respect that, it's still a great moment. I love that you misstook Iida for his brother for a moment, he really does look so much more mature now! Did you catch the girl Shoji fished out of the river cheering him on? It's so cute that she's wearing an octopus necklace! Or Deku knowing the exact type of shirt the All Might T-Shirt was, that cracked me the hell up, but with tears in my eyes coz Nostalgia, sigh. This story is so great, man. I think it will always stay with me, it's one of those all time masterpieces for me.

Suddenly it's really easy to be fans of some of these sleeper characters 😅 I'm planning on rewatching the show but it might be a few years from now. I'll talk about that more at some point

Glorious ending and I'll continue my point from last episode now that it's not a spoiler though I won't dwell on the negativity promise lol. This episode got it right AFO is a lonely man which is another reason for me why the grandiose "I orchestrated your every moment of existence" thing from last time was more damaging to AFO's character than necessary, since he already was established to pick up Shigaraki from the street and mold him into what he is now. The cartoonishly evil and methodical retcon is kinda too much. But enough of that, this ending! Mineta and Invisble Girl stepping up in particular got me feeling like a proud father, had me coming back with the milk claiming I always had faith 😭 Even Class B, while more of a background element, I'm still glad got some time to shine. And finally of course as others mentioned the full circle final smash (Deku in Smash 6 when?) being a reference both to the first one in the series but also the climax of the first movie and then Izuku's mom also referencing the way he lept out to help Bakugo against Alolan Muk. This anime is damn near a decade old and my god did I feel the nostalgia. The anime's pacing did magical stuff to the manga as between the small weekly chunks of content and hiatuses it was an unfortunately underwhelming way to experience it all, so I could not be anymore happy with how it was adapted. Last but not least it's an absolute ordeal and won't happen anytime soon if at all but what are your thoughts about an MHA rewatch? Maybe a year or 2 down the road when the schedule is missing a long running show it can be a fun addition but obviously no pressure 8 seasons of emotions is a lot lol.

Jade

Well Bakugo did say back in S1 i believe that he was gonna blow him up xD

Snor

I like that you picked up on AFO's depression ever since taking over Shigaraki's body and losing his brother. There's lots of hints towards it, he talks about seeing everyone as grey flesh (ironic), or that they're all carrion. I'm paraphrasing, but there's also the line "so many wounded heroes, yet I feel nothing" - past AFO has always emphasised how dangerous and scary a wounded hero can be. Now he's truly empty and doesn't care. Everything he's doing at this point feels hollow and desperate. It helps hammer home the final point that he really isn't some demon lord, just a sad lonely human.

MisterRathrion

Did Bakugo just destroy Kurogiri? 8 seasons of yelling “DIE” and he finally does it

Deiondre0

You Say Run is amazing, I've listened to it countless times when I want a quick reminder of that feeling 😂

26:59 Also, its REALLY funny that the guy who wanted to dominate the world, the same guy who sat at a throne and had hordes of his followers bowing to him, crumbled the second Midoriya broke through to his core and fully understood the man. He begged for Deku not to look at him, not to expose who he truly was, despite spending the series telling everyone he wanted the world to serve him. Sad lonely man is right.

For this week’s music chat, from 16:56 to the mid card, we got a return of MHA’s most famous track, and easily one of the most famous anime tracks of all time, “You Say Run”. It’s so well known that it spawned a meme that’s basically just “You Say Run goes with anything” and then insert literally any video you could imagine. It was historically used the most during season 1, and then only occasionally during the later seasons, but it was first played when Deku rushed out to save Bakugo from the sludge villain. It was also used a bunch like every other episode during season 1. It’s most famously associated with the All Might vs Nomu fight. Then later Deku vs Shoto at the sports festival, as well as the Two Heroes movie double smash from Deku and All Might. I can’t recall many moments during seasons 3-5, but season 6 used it twice I think, once during the Class 1-A vs Machia fight, and again during the Class 1-A vs Deku fight. Season 7 did it once during Deku and Shigaraki’s fight. And finally, they brought it back one last time this episode, for the perfect parallel to that first moment that All Might was even recalling as it was playing this episode. It’s pretty much the piece of music that people think of when thinking about MHA, and for a damn good reason. Yuki Hayashi has never missed with the MHA OST, and the last few seasons have had some of my favorite anime tracks to date, but I still believe “You Say Run” is his magnum opus. Also this episode, we got a top new Goodwin quote: “If you’re missing the chance for attention in the spotlight, can you even call yourself America?”

It really is endless 😂 Another thought I just had is that in making these gestures of "weakness," there's also something inviting and inclusive about it to others. It makes sense why people are both terrified but also seem really happy to be able to give the shirts off their backs to help. Finally there's something meaningful to do

Alex G

It still doesn't feel real. This episode was a crazy dream I haven't woken up from yet

Alex G

You're right. The original is very explicitly "my" in personal terms, not "the" in objective terms. https://youtube.com/shorts/XDIWdjgYPeU?si=DCvUc3pwjAHQCk8W

I'd just like to add a note about "the strength of weakness" idea. All Might managed to embody that same energy in his last fight with the Armored Suit. In Season 6 at that conversation near the All Might statue, Stain helped All Might to pick himself back up and "...fight, even if I have to crawl on the ground" (something he literally finds himself doing right before AFO grabs him to drag him over to Deku and Shigaraki) During that last fight, the world was watching All Might on the screen, and not leaning back, but leaning in. For the first time he allowed himself to be both a hero AND a human, and everyone was faced with EVERYTHING he did for them, to see him standing there fighting as nothing but a mortal man. In that moment the world truly understood who he is and has been all this time. People might not have been able to do anything in a physical sense, but the idea Nighteye talks about of the energy in communal hope being key to changing the future does some narrative work to imply that people being spurned to pray and hope had a literal effect on the situation or at least mattered in some sense. Their fevered prayers that he would be victorious were made manifest through Bakugo. Beautiful stuff... I love this series so much.

21:57 Okay so to preface, I saw someone post the dub reading of this on my timeline yesterday and I was a bit annoyed on the choice for the translation. After watching it again, I’m a lot less annoyed because I think the meaning is still conveyed, although a bit muted. Here All Might said that since the day Deku spurred him to action, in episode 1, Deku was the greatest hero he had ever known. The official translation in the manga and in the sub had All Might say that since that day Deku was HIS greatest hero, and boy do I love that so much; I get emotional just thinking about it. In many ways Deku was trying to live up to the image of his idol, he wanted to prove that he was worthy of holding one for all, and being All Might’s successor. He held the quirk in such high regards, but little did he know, the very day he met his idol, he became that man’s greatest and highest ideal. Deku was the greatest even when he was that scrawny quirkless kid.

Alter Nate

I think there was a lot of meaning behind AFO vestige in his final convo with his brother First one, it’s his most current self, damage and obsessed, years removed from actually interacting with his brother. This AFO screams “I won’t allow you to fade away I own you” Second vestige, he reverts to a younger version, perhaps a few years after his brothers death, still possessive but less so, when this AFO screams “ no no no, I won’t allow you to fade away” to me it’s sounds less like AFO telling yoichi he can’t fade away and more like AFO telling the world he won’t let his brother fade away. Then his 3rd vestige, this one slightly younger and I think this is the version at the time of yoichis death, just screaming “I love you, I’m nothing without you” these are probably the words he wanted to tell his brother but he died so fast it was impossible. If you think about the timeline, this is the first time they have spoken since that tunnel with Kudo

Lyrical Kell of Music

Yeah I was crying right there with you my guy. One hell of a journey you’ve been on and I’ve enjoyed watching it along side you these past few years. But it ain’t over yet :)

Cemagik!

Thankfully in the All Might line at least there's the "ever since that day" or whatever the phrasing was

Alex G

Like I said, how were they supposed to know it would circle back in such a way?

Matthew Richson

1. Kinda wish they did something to change Urarakas line since it majorly changes the meaning of the hole you can do it from them all just saying that to them also in a way cheering his hero name 2. Dekus final smash is a 1 to 1 recreation of his first smash against the 0P robot here a link to a TikTok showing the other references https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTr9Yme4w/ 3. Kinda crazy that deku only had his powers for about a year😕 and in that time became the greatest hero 4. More Bakugo development of him telling deku to not let him surpass him 5. Dekus final smash just like all might be ago in season 3 both fighting with the ember and making a big gust of wind like season 1 sludge villain fight

Mjw

And there we have it, the action climax of MHA. The culmination of this long journey… but there’s more story to tell before it’s over. Now, the dub unfortunately suffers from hindsight and translation/lip sync troubles this week. Firstly that Ochaco’s line from all the way back in season 1 comes back to bite the dub team because it keeps the dub’s original translation of it sounding “kinda cute” rather than what the more accurate version says, which is that Deku sounds like “do your best”. People were hoping that they would retcon the line but oh well. Hindsight is a bitch. Furthermore, All Might’s line is said a bit less personal here, the official way he says it is “you’ve always been my greatest hero” vs “you’ve been the greatest hero I’ve ever known”. A minute difference there. I don’t quite share in everyone’s disappointment as much, but I understand why. Doesn’t drag down the performances though.
