Each of the four main concubine's households are like little fortresses and the ladies-in-waiting/servants shouldn't be mingling with the general servants. They are like each concubine's personal army, and they're at war with each other to become the next Empress Consort. Maomao is an anomaly, since she officially belongs to Jinshi but is assigned to Gyukuyou, but then ends up running around all over and helping everyone. To the rest of the people in the Rear Palace (and then whoever they tell outside of the palace), Lishu is considered just as highly ranked as Lihua, Gyokuyou, and Loulan. But if the world finds out her home is a mess and the servants are all pushing her around/mistreating her, that makes her look pathetic. As a main concubine, her ladies/servants should be kissing her ass and replaced if they suck at their job - by Lishu's orders, not Jinshi's. And her head lady has the right to be as ferocious as Hongniang. Hongniang is bodyguard, best friend, butler, nanny, drill sergeant - all in support of Gyokuyou, who holds her complete loyalty. I honestly think Jinshi is not worried about his romantic future with Maomao when it comes to telling her the truth. He wants to keep her respect but also her casual attitude toward him. He likes her because she treats him like she treats everyone else. Love/crush aside, he enjoys her company, finds her intriguing, thinks it's fun to push her buttons, and believes she would be a strong ally/asset in whatever he's expecting for the future. If she distances herself from him too much because of their social divide, his life would be missing something important - something more than just a possible lover.
