Also! Another thing to take away from the scene where the previous emperor is handing Jinshi the orpiment: it’s VERY similar to how he would offer candy to the young girls in the rear palace. Jinshi is also a very attractive and has a bit of an androgynous appearance, so it can be assumed that the late emperor thought he was a young girl.

2025-11-20 08:26:25 +0000 UTCFrom Lady Anshi's perspective, it seems like the previous Emperor didn't just prefer little girls - he was actively terrified of adult women, and that implies the "Empress" twisted him since she raised him alone, just a low-rank concubine and her bottom of the barrel son (because there were already a few others older than him) living in that single room together. I'm not excusing him from being a pedo, but knowing how he became that way is important, I think. I'm not even saying the Empress abused him, but something about his childhood instilled in him a...repulsion toward adult women. I don't think Lady Anshi loved him at all, but she did expect to be treated with respect and honor - he could at least act cordially to her when they passed each other in the palace. But even in non-sexual situations, it seems he can't bring himself to look at adult women, much less say hi. If it wasn't clear enough, she "tormented" him and got pregnant with her second son. This is a big reason why her second son (whether he's really her son or grandson, to the world he is her son) was raised quietly by Suiren and Gaoshun, away from the court, and why no one knows what her son looks like to the point he can waltz around openly calling himself "Jinshi the Eunuch". Everyone at court thinks she had an affair to get pregnant again, because they all know the Emperor won't touch adult women. It has to be strange for her to see how much Jinshi resembles the late Emperor. And it's very likely she made sure he wouldn't become too obsessed with a "childish" hobby or toy - she didn't want him to grow up like the previous Emperor, with no social skills, afraid of the world, inwardly focused, spoiled/ruined by an overbearing mother. Timeline - whoever that first daughter of the Emperor was, she would now be in her late thirties (older than the current Emperor, who is around 37). And the mother would probably be... 52ish, since she was probably extremely young. If the child is now 38-40, she could have children as old as 20-25.
