2025-11-13 22:48:12 +0000 UTCJinshi could tell the colors apart - that was clear from his actions and questions along the maze. But, whether it is as the previous Emperor's son or the current Emperor's son (as we all suspect), he is still the current heir apparent, though Maomao refuses to think about it. She still seems determined to think of Jinshi as the Emperor's "favorite" (wink wink, nudge nudge, snicker) eunuch/lover. This could be the Emperor's way of making sure some people out there know that Jinshi passed the test (with Maomao's help), just in case his claim is called into question someday. Until the Emperor has a publicly recognized son and heir of his own, Jinshi is stuck with that position. Whatever the Emperor knows about Jinshi, Jinshi was told he is the previous Emperor's son with the Empress Dowager. Thinking that weird and creepy old man is his father has to be...not a happy thought. He took on this task of "tending to the garden" of concubines, presumably to help make sure the Emperor will have a clear and direct heir - replacing himself. Does that mean Jinshi does not want to be the next Emperor, or that he has cleverly convinced the Emperor to put him in the place where he can be most effective at ensuring another heir never makes it past infancy? We can guess, knowing what we know and seeing what we've seen. But if the Emperor should die suddenly, what would the average person think when Jinshi's true identity was revealed? They have all been told the Emperor's brother is sickly or hides his face, and probably think he's mentally challenged or deformed or something juicy to gossip about like that. Adding the possibility that he could have been killing off the babies would be a nasty rumor. Showing off that he passed the bloodline test might mitigate that to some degree. Was Jinshi so serious because he was hoping for confirmation one way or the other? The Emperor seems to want Jinshi to be his heir, as his son or brother, and also seems to think Maomao is a good companion for Jinshi (or he'd rather Jinshi face Lakan's over-protectiveness). What is odd is that Maomao is still considered a servant-girl, despite everyone being aware that Lakan is her father. Even if she is illegitimate, he could publicly claim her and raise her status in an instant. He is more than just the military strategist - he's the oldest son of a very upper-class family and presumably very, very rich - even after buying out Fengxian so lavishly.

2025-11-13 16:39:45 +0000 UTCThe colorblindness test is actually pretty clever thinking for the time, flawed though it is. When I first watched this episode, I decided to do a little research into colorblindness, so be aware that I am by no means an expert in this topic. As I recall, the reason colorblindness is so rare in women is because it’s generally recessive, meaning the father would have to be colorblind, and the mother would need to at least carry it in order for a woman to have it. Men on the other hand, can only get it if the mother carries it, but if the trait is passed on, they will be colorblind. So assuming the Mother Royal was one of the only colorblind people in the nation at the time, that means it’s extremely likely any would be emperor who is colorblind is descended from the Mother Royal. This brings us to a new problem though, men can’t pass on the colorblind gene due to it being in the X chromosome. Hence why Maomao silently mentions that they’d need to bring in concubines from a “related lineage” in order to guarantee they emperors are of the Mother Royal, by making sure the emperors have two potential sources of Mother Royal genes. Basically, some not immediate incest but still incest needed to happen for this test to work. So you were right with your first assumption!

2025-11-13 09:02:08 +0000 UTCIt's crazy. I think my original intended synopsis was something about the emperor taking a day off to do escape the room with Maomao

2025-11-13 06:56:26 +0000 UTCMaomao casually hanging out with the Emperor is wild. What's wild is that Maomao does a few things that would be considered disrespectful when around the emperor, like being lost in thought in his presence, but Emperor just lets her be.
