2025-11-02 04:26:53 +0000 UTCNowak is introduced as this imposing and frightening authority figure only to crumble into hopelessness and meaninglessness. But him remembering the names of all the people he killed sort of shows how much their deaths actually did impact him; I really appreciate the layers written into all these characters. Also the contrast of all the people he's killed dying with purpose and hope, whilst he still wanders around aimlessly and lost is somehow tragic yet beautiful. Coming to Antoni and just the story of the orthodoxy of the church, I've read somewhere that the author apparently mentioned that he was also initially under the impression that heliocentrism was persecuted in that time period in europe, but was surprised to find out that it is more like a modern myth and that it wasn't as prevalent or extreme. So him sort of framing this revelation into a plot twist and focusing on a small group of characters to explore different thoughts, ideas and perspectives through the select lens of church orthodoxy feels quite brilliant to me. Nowak was the biggest victim/scapegoat of this story and I don't know if I feel painfully sorry for him or thoroughly satisfied with his story arc.
