Apothecary Diaries 1x24 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

In Apothecary Diaries 1x24, Jinshi and Maomao, she's a 10, but she looks like a Go piece.

They lied to him and told him she was dead. This is the first time he realizes she's alive. A lot of hurt and suffering would've been avoided if they had told him the truth when he returned. Viewers incorrectly blame Lakan. If one has been living all his years being told that the colour red is actually called "blue" and then he walks a red light, he cannot be punished.

That's a great explanation

I love the little anecdote you gave on a previous episode about a friend of yours who is in actuality the most caring person you know but treats himself as a nasty, evil person. Even then I thought of how this might link to Lakan once you find out the tragic truth about him. This perspective we have been getting of him this entire time is a manifestation of a similar self-loathing that he himself exacerbates. He'd always been a bit odd, but that whole incident I feel is what changed him into dropping all pretexts and letting people assume the worst about him. For in his mind, those thoughts were nothing compared to how he felt about himself. In his mind, he deserved to be thought of as the villain.

Lol catching up with your reactions, your initial aversion to Jinshi is so similar to my experience! My guy was just super creepy and handsy. Having rewatched it a couple of times though, I think his character reflects his status and just the power men held over women at that time, especially men in higher ranks and power. It was probably normalised for men to treat people/woman under them as objects, and Jinshi probably quite genuinely doesn't know the concept of "personal space/agency" when it comes to people working under him, feeling an authority over them- be it using them as his pawns, and having them do anything he says. And that's maybe why Maomao intrigues him so much, she isn't enamored by him or his position, and isn't taught to play by the expections of a maid who surrenders of people of higher ranks. People like Jinshi in higher ranks can do whatever they want but people like Maomao of lower ranks touching Jinshi is considered uncouth. If you notice, as the series continues, Jinshi touching Maomao is very normalised, while anytime Maomao does the same out of excitment, Jinshi is taken aback alluding to the authority that position and ranks give you. Also, just the fact that people of lower ranks working on the palace grounds generally lower their head and avoid eye contact/looking at higher officials/royals when they enter shows the culture and power dynamics in the palace. Just goes to show how much of an anomaly Maomao and her privileges are; lucky for her. On rewatches the subtleties and nuances in the story telling is great!

I think it's because he blames himself for what happened to Fengxian.

Another thing I forgot to mention, but there's times throughout the first season where you will see Maomao look at her left hand and examine it. She happens to be looking at her left pinky finger, the same one that was cut as a baby. That's why she said it grew back. And it could have been either her whole pinky or just the last link of her pinky finger. But since she was an infant when it happened, it grew back just fine. But if the creator is as detailed as I think they are, they may have made that specific finger slightly smaller than her other pinky finger. I'm not saying that happened, but it would be actual insanity to put that much attention to detail in her character design.

Long time no subscribe lol. Excited to catch up with your Apothecary diaries and Orb reactions!

On Lakan’s earlier conversation with Jinshi, I think it’s a combination of quite a few things. Tactics definitely being one of them, as asking it this way will almost certainly get Jinshi to talk to Maomao about it. Another is that he very clearly blames himself for everything that happened to Fengxian, and describing it in such a way paints himself the way he likely feels about that situation. That, combined with the fact that he’s still a bit of a creep that loves to play games with people, could explain some of Lakan’s conversations.

I loved this finale for this season. The resolution reached with Lakan and Fengxian was oddly therapeutic to me. It might have been because the raw and pure emotion Lakan showed when he finally saw her again and that despite her physical health and appearance, he still saw and beholds her as the beautiful woman he fell in love with. And if it wasn't made clear, Luomen is Lakan's uncle. Turns out that Maomao ended up being taken care and raised by the person that had the most meaningful impact on Lakan as a child and was clearly highly respected by him. To put it plainly, Maomao was indeed dancing for her mother, not Meimei. I also appreciate the very nuanced approach that Maomao has in regards to her relationship with Lakan. It's almost always an easy out to make a parent despicable or irredeemable and dismiss them entirely as not being worth thinking or caring about. Maomao approached things with a silver lining perspective of seeing the positive out of a situation that's quite negative overall. Because what happened between her parents, she was taken in and raised by Luomen and becomes the apothecary who's in love with medicine and experiments. Because she's a child of a courtesan that almost cost the Verdigris house its livelihood, those that reside and dwell within cared for her and became her family of whom she is very close. She wouldn't be who she is without things being the way they were. Care to express your initial first thoughts and impressions about this show/season and compare how your thoughts and opinions differ now that you've gone through the whole first season in its entirety? What kinds of expectations did you have and what did the show do that kept your attention, interest, and even your curiosity? I'd love to hear your overall thoughts on the first season. You might could even do a video on your first impressions and everything and final thoughts on the first season now that you officially finished the 24 episode stretch, which honestly felt longer than that, imo. I truly feel that no episode was a waste of time and had meaning and value for the overall story that the creator wanted to tell. The only question now is where do we go from here? Can the second season keep this momentum? Find out on the next episode of Dragon Ball Z!

I did not! I got it from comments last episode (after I watched this one) 😂

I can't tell if you noticed that Luomen (Maomao's adopted father) is Lakan's uncle (so Maomao's great uncle), the one who taught him to tell people apart using go stones, who got kicked out of the palace in disgrace, and that's why Lakan had to go abroad for a while...

Serralinda

Wow that's a lot, but I guess a lot would happen between now and Maomao becoming emperor.

The good news about this show is that the source material has a lot of content. If there was a season of anime for every light novel already published we’d have roughly eight seasons. The light novels are ongoing as well.

Annex, not atrium. Sorry that was bothering me so bad I had to type it out lol

Uh oh I guess like the lead rhododendron hybrid I'm gonna have to pretend this was an ox befungus Family dynamics are not simple, to put it mildly. Thankfully I think one of the mitigating factors is time. It's not always the case but people tend to soften with experience, and also gain more perspective on what actually matters.

Alex G

Sadly for Maomao, that wasn’t the bezoar. That was the weird bug fungus Jinshi gave her when he bought her out from the verdigris house. She still just admiring it I also can relate to the uncertainty of familial relationships, I’ve got a similar situation with my father, it was a very turbulent time reconciling both sets of emotions involved
