Added 2025-10-15 01:00:08 +0000 UTCIn Apothecary Diaries 1x23, Balsam and Woodsorrel, how could the man who wiped his greasy chicken fingers on another man's hat be THIS inconsiderate of others?

I also think she's not being entirely serious, moreso like a stern father threatening to send his son to "military camp" if he doesn't behave and stop slacking off. A lot of the culture around this story consists of not saying what you actually feel

2025-10-16 06:43:54 +0000 UTCYeah as Maomao gets at I think a lot of this is on Fengxian. I guess one of the big motivations for why the lack of communication is probably pride

2025-10-16 01:52:22 +0000 UTCto be fucking fair. this also could've been avoided if fengxian just told him what she's planning directly, or rushed to do that when he told her he was going abroad (i assume that she didn't do that then because she took it as rejection from him?) this show is full of this symbolic indirect communication, especially from maomao, and that creates this cool vibe but is *so* risky if it's your only chance convey what you mean. like maomao's dried rose this episode. if we take that literally and not just as a way to convey something more poetically in fiction, that is an insane choice from her here about unknown unknowns: huh. i'd say that for me knowing that i'm probably making mistakes but not being able to do anything about it is the worst, just being in a bad state of mind or situation where mistakes are all you can make for an extended period of time. but yeah the unknown unknowns can probably make you feel stupid, like oh you thought you had a right to feel confident or good? remember this before doing it again but feeling like reality is being shaken and reframed can also be the most fun thing that can happen if it's not horrible, so i guess it's fair

2025-10-15 14:52:55 +0000 UTCInteresting that you expect Lakan to know anything about women beyond the superficial. He was raised as a weird outcast within his family, couldn't tell people apart by their faces (so he can't identify expressions well - not that Fengxian let things show on her face anyway), and had to learn to figure things out a completely new way (helped by his uncle) to interact with the wider world. Just because he's good at strategy doesn't mean he's also knowledgeable about every aspect of life or the opposite sex. Many people who are gifted in one area are lacking in others. It's similar to how Maomao had no interest in studying for the court lady exam, so she failed it. Lakan blames himself, but honestly, there's no way he could have known what Fengxing was planning, how she felt about him, or that she was pregnant. A courtesan would know how to avoid getting pregnant or how to lose a baby if she did get pregnant. It wasn't a possibility anyone would have considered in that situation, with that woman. Also like Maomao, both of her parents are terrible communicators when it comes to personal feelings and emotions. She could have put it in the one letter he received before leaving. I think it's safe to assume his family did not forward the letters to him, so no way for him to know she'd written while he was gone. They were all victims of circumstance and made huge mistakes all on their own. But there was no malice or cruelty or callousness intended. They are each of them (Maomao included) too self-contained and restricted by their upbringings.

2025-10-15 14:50:20 +0000 UTCSome details from the Light Novel: Maomao's poison was actually salt. She put salt into the drinks to accelerate its effect, which is why Lakan got knocked out almost instantly.

2025-10-15 02:41:13 +0000 UTCWhat I'm wondering about this episode and next is why present himself that way to Jinshi? I can speculate but it's such a wildly callous way to talk about what happened given the extent of his grief. Though that in itself could be a reason

2025-10-15 02:15:01 +0000 UTCThis episode means so much to humanizing and fleshing out Lakan as an individual. I think it's an absolute standout episode. This episode also clarifies that the relationship between Lakan and Fengxian was very much mutual and consensual instead of it being that of the implication that he forced himself onto her. That series of events that followed were very unfortunate, ngl. Being gone for 3 years and learning what happened when you returned had to have greatly affected you more than words can easily explain. I love that there's this great respect for his uncle, of whom you can probably piece together the identity, and the intrigue, respect, and affection towards Fengxian shows that he's not quite a cruel or heartless as he seems. Before, I described him as being somewhat whimsical, which I can still can stand by, but he's also very critical of his actions that he considers mistakes as shown in this episode. Also, Meimei is one of the three princesses of the Verdigris House. The one we were focusing on for Lihaku was Pairin. We haven't seen or heard much about Joka, but she's the last of the three. As for the English Dub of this show, if you ever give this show a rewatch, I'd happily encourage the Dub and would be curious for you to share your thoughts regarding it and the performance compared to the Japanese. I personally think they're side by side with how close they are. And yes, the opening had plot relevance to this part of the show! But you really wouldn't know until you knew, so it's no worries! You'd never think that Lakan's actual weakness was alcohol, would you? Him having little to no tolerance for it while his daughter is a budding alcoholic is quite the disparity. Who would've guessed?!

2025-10-15 02:07:26 +0000 UTCI think there is a line that alludes to that because it hit me later what they were doing there. Though seems like it might have been the same result either way

2025-10-15 01:45:04 +0000 UTCI love the scene with Lakan choosing between chess and go because, although the anime doesn't state this as overtly as the manga and Ln, it's heavily implied that Lakan would win their chess games more often while Fengxian would best him at go a lot more. So her giving him the choice between go and chess is basically her saying do you want to win or do you want me to win.
