The colored tablets may have been Fengmings way of communicating with someone on the outside in order to get her hands on the poison she used. That's my best guess, anyways

Melon Bread

thank you for the hating on jinshi 🙏 it would be a lot easier to care about whatever emotional turmoil he's having here if he wasn't being weirdly invasive. again

Your discussion about regret during the episode was surprisingly relatable, after thinking on it a bit. Regrets that only affected yourself or those you don’t particularly care for, are much easier to rationalize as “learning experiences”, than those where people you care about ended up hurt, despite both instances serving that same purpose, at least subconsciously. If anything, those second types of regrets often affect our lives significantly more, as we usually want to avoid a similar outcome even more because someone close to you got hurt. Though when looking back, it can be much harder to see the work you put in to learn from those mistakes, while instead focusing more on the harm caused to that person.

If you don't know what flowers the bees have been gathering from, you don't know what sorts of small traces of poisonous/toxic elements could be in the honey. An adult would likely be fine, but babies are too delicate to handle some of them. It was tragic, but Fengming just kept digging herself deeper and deeper to try and keep it all hidden. Whether she did that altruistically to make the loss less painful for AhDuo or to save herself...probably both. AhDuo seemed to be naturally motherly, so losing the baby - even if he wasn't her actual son - was traumatic. While Maomao is freely making shit up here regarding the baby swap, it all does fit together well. How much anyone knows is still a mystery. If the babies were swapped, who knows about it besides AhDuo? The Emperor? The Empress Dowager? Jinshi? Maomao's father, Luomen? Is Jinshi the alter ego/disguise of the Emperor's son/brother? Why is Jinshi, whatever his relationship to the Emperor and AhDuo, hanging out as the Manager of his father/brother's harem? Does he want to make sure a healthy boy is born to replace him as heir to the throne? Or keep that from happening? And how the heck do the color-burning tablets play into this? Was Fengming signalling someone to send her the poison to give Lishu? Or working out with a cook how to do the poisoning/which dish to put it in?

The type of flower the bees take the nectar from will greatly affect the honey that is produced; this is because different flowers produce nectar with different chemical compounds. It can affect colour, flavour, and viscosity. The reason the honey was poisonous for the baby was because the pollen came from a poisonous flower; rhododendron, maybe? It's probably not a concern if you're in a country with an FDA, but apparently it's something to look out for if you go to Turkey or Nepal. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This episode is so full of info that I loved reading in the manga. With this part specifically, it kept me going back and forth between if Jinshi is the current emperor's younger brother or his son. Because if we follow Maomao's logic, Ah Duo's son would be the current emperor's child and previous emperor's second son would have been killed from Fengming due to the honey if they were swapped. The info is an absolute overload for me and had been difficult to lay out. If we assume Jinshi is Ah Duo's son, he would be around Maomao's age of 16-17 and he would be raised as the current emperor's younger brother, not his son. The current Emperor's MOTHER was also giving birth on the same day to his younger brother, but if he was swapped and died, that means the current emperor would be the only son of the previous emperor and Jinshi, who would be his son, would be treated as his younger brother officially and not his son. And this is under the assumption that Maomao is correct in her assessment and interpretation of Ah Duo's words. But yes, now we get the reveal that Fengming tried to poison and kill Lishu to keep her quiet only for almost divine intervention to save her with her food taster swapping her food with Gyokuyo's at the garden party. And we still haven't completely resolved everything up to this point! What was the point of the fire changing colors? Who killed Sir Kounen? IS THE CAUSE OF DEATH YET AGAIN THE RHODODHENDRON??? AND WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?!?

In a lot of East Asian fiction, especially from before 1800ish, it's considered a romantic ending (not exactly a "good" ending, but overall "resolved") when painful truths are allowed to die with someone. I don't know what to think about that trope.

The hints about Jinshi being the emperor's 'brother' go back to the garden party episode, when he was coming to the party late in a different formal wear and he poked his head through the curtain to see what the fuss is... right behind the spot reserved for the Emperor's brother (who is often noted as being absent due to 'illness). And regardless if he's the brother or Ah do's son Jinshi is the heir, at least until the Emperor gets a formal empress in which case I believe her child would take precedent over Jinshi since he would have been born only to a concubine at the time. As noted, Ah Do is not from a prestigious family or foreign nation like the other concubines so has much less political influence, her only leverage being her close personal friendship with the Emperor. Keeping Jinshi as just the Emperor's 'brother' is more beneficial if the Emperor does get an Empress because it'd help avoid a messy succession dispute.
