I guess they don't have a word for allergy in this world.

Obviously, that idiot minister really likes rhododendron soup... Maomao is going to become a horror movie antagonist with all those pins in her head. Or a Christmas tree. IF she doesn't OD on rhododendron soup and puffer fish guts. Poor little Lady Lishu. First, she had to poison herself by eating the fish she's allergic to, and her taster knew she didn't want to eat it (we overheard her ladies saying she was a picky eater at the start of the episode), then someone else tried to deliberately poison her soup. On top of all that, she wore a bright pink dress that clashed with Gyokuyou's crimson one. She's just a mess.

Like in a lot of Japanese fiction, character names seem to be significant to different degrees. I don't know enough Chinese to tell for most of the Chinese names (except that Maomao is 猫猫 "cat cat" just like "meow meow"), and I still don't know what Jinshi is supposed to mean, but some are a bit clearer. Lihaku is kind of a Japanese way of pronouncing the name Li Bai (李白), who's basically the Tang Dynasty / Chinese equivalent of Shakespeare in English or Molière in French. So, that guy is maybe a poet? Or he likes drinking under the moonlight (one of Li Bai's more famous poems)? Gotta be something there. [Also, just for trivia: soba/buckwheat doesn't contain gluten. That's why 100% pure soba noodles are so hard to make. Maomao's allergy is to something in the buckwheat itself]

This episode was great and I imagine even better with some hindsight. There's so much going on but I have no idea how it all connects yet 😂

Okay, so THIS episode was one of my favorites for a few reasons. This episode showed that Maomao is essentially in the good graces of two of the four Consorts with how they more or less marked her with a valuable item. I loved the moment of Lihua coming up and giving her a hairpin like that. It's almost as if to say, "I will not forget what you've done for me and you matter to me." And yeah, Lady Lishu was a concubine of the prior emperor when she was 9... all I'll say on that is that if it wasn't apparent this took place in a different time period before, it should be now. Child brides being more normalized back then and all. But the scene where Maomao was tasting the poison was the teaser trailer for the anime, so it really sticks out to me and it was done wonderfully. Lihaku is a character that will likely show up and be relevant later, so put a (hair)pin in that character for now. So something that's interesting to me about the words Maomao used when explaining allergic reactions is that at no point in the entire conversation are they referred to as allergies. It's likely the word hadn't been popularized yet, so they don't use it here and instead Maomao puts heavy emphasis on saying food you CANNOT eat. And us being shown that Maomao herself has a deadly allergic reaction to buckwheat really solidifies that she's making what she says to have weight. Maomao scaring Lishu's food taster to really drive home the point that this has deadly, irreversible consequences instead of being directly confrontational like she was with Lihua's ladies in waiting shows that she was warning her and not punishing her. What else? Oh, there's Jinshi himself this episode. He had a different hairpin when he returned, so that might mean something at some point. All in all, a great episode that seems to be unraveling quite a bit behind the forefront.

Since when did people have to do something stupid for apparent gain? Maomao just made the tasting look so delicious that minister couldn't believe it was possibly poison. Impulse and curiosity kills the cat and all 🤣

I want a girl to look at me the way Maomao looks at poison
